Improved protocols for wireless networking are disclosed. At low/zero marginal cost, embodiments enable increased throughput and reduced delays at high traffic density, while greatly reducing message collisions and ensuring that each user is able to transmit in order. By providing a sequencing advantage to nodes that have already been delayed, embodiments can eliminate the “blocked node” problem in which some nodes are suppressed indefinitely while other nodes are allowed to dominate a communication channel with multiple transmissions. As the wireless traffic density soars in the coming years, embodiments can improve system utility while enhancing user satisfaction by providing higher message success rates, reducing user frustration, minimizing message delays and message collisions, and eliminating node blocking. An array of embodiments can be implemented on existing and planned equipment with appropriate programming. And of vital importance in emergencies, the likelihood of a blocked 911 call can be significantly reduced.

The present disclosure describes methods and apparatuses for paging with enhanced beamforming. In example implementations, a base station (BS) transmits at a paging occasion a paging message to multiple end-user devices (EUDs) via a downlink communication with a wide beam. If an EUD fails to obtain the paging message, the EUD selects a frequency sub-band and formulates a paging request with an EUD identifier. The EUD transmits the paging request to the BS via an uplink communication with a narrow beam using the selected frequency sub-band. The BS processes the paging request and formulates a paging response based on the identifier. The BS transmits the paging response via a downlink communication with a narrow beam on the selected frequency sub-band. The BS determines a direction of the narrow beam of the downlink communication based on a direction of the narrow beam of the uplink communication to answer the paging response.

Paging with enhanced beamforming

The present disclosure describes methods and apparatuses for enhancing emergency communications in a wireless system. Implementations can be realized with an end-user device, a base station, or a combination thereof. Described implementations facilitate the institution of emergency communications with a heightened level of reliability to increase the safety of an end-user that is relying on a wireless connection to make an emergency communication. Example implementations include local transmission priority elevation, automatic audio channel modification, transmission power boosting, end-user interaction control, modulation scheme adjustment, robust category selection, prioritized resource assignment, and so forth. In some aspects, an end-user device includes a transmission data buffer to store emergency communication data having a first priority level and other communication data having a second priority level. A transmission priority elevation module elevates the first priority level above the second priority level based on the first priority level being associated with the emergency communication data.

Emergency communication in a wireless system

The present disclosure describes methods and apparatuses for interleaving radio access technologies. In some aspects, the systems include a user device with a first wireless connection of a first RAT and a second wireless connection of a second RAT. The user device receives a coordinated uplink schedule for transmitting via the first wireless connection and the second wireless connection. The user device transmits a first portion of data during a data frame via the first wireless connection. According to the coordinated uplink schedule, the transmission of the first portion of data is interrupted, by the user device, to transmit a signal via the second wireless connection of the second RAT. The user device may then resume transmitting the data frame by transmitting a second portion of the data frame via the first wireless connection.
