A trough-like concentrator having a reflective surface contoured to image the sun at a linear focus. The reflective surface is supported by a structural tube having plural ribs. A microcomputer is programmed to exclusively aim the concentrator at the sun. A stationary vacuum-insulated linear solar energy receiver is positioned at the focus of the concentrator, with heat-transfer fluid entering at one end of the receiver and leaving at the other end. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Solar energy collector system

Disclosed is a heliostat collector apparatus comprising at least one heliostat suspended from a plurality of longitudinally extending linkage means. An enclosure structure is disposed adjacent the heliostat and provides a means for allowing the heliostat to be substantially protected from weathering. A first drive means is operatively connected to the heliostat to effect steering thereof in at least one of first and second predetermined directions. Finally, a frame member is adapted for supporting the heliostat at an inner portion thereof. The frame includes a plurality of outer expandable portions. Each one of the expandable portions is adapted to slidably engage a corresponding one of the plurality of linkage means. The expandable portions are further adapted to allow the heliostat to be slidably moved along the linkage means in directions away from and towards the enclosure structure and to substantially reduce stress acting on the heliostat during steering.

Rim-drive cable-aligned heliostat collector system

A tracking system is provided for pivotally mounted spaced-apart solar collectors. A pair of cables is connected to spaced-apart portions of each collector, and a driver displaces the cables, thereby causing the collectors to pivot about their mounting, so as to assume the desired orientation. The collectors may be of the cylindrical type as well as the flat-plate type. Rigid spar-like linkages may be substituted for the cables. Releasable attachments of the cables to the collectors is also described, as is a fine tuning mechanism for precisely aligning each individual collector.

Tracking system for solar collectors

A solar concentrator device is disclosed. The device includes a solar concentrating panel having a longitudinal axis and defining a parabolic surface having a focal line substantially parallel to its longitudinal axis. The parabolic surface terminates in opposed longitudinal side edges. A mechanism is provided for rotating the panel about its longitudinal axis. Finally, an arrangement provides torsional support for the panel and includes a frame structure aligned obliquely to the longitudinal axis and extending between the opposed longitudinal side edges of the parabolic surface.

Solar concentrator device and support structure therefor

This invention is a trough solar collector that uses inexpensive aluminized plastic films as the reflecting surface. The films are held in proper shape by stretching them between rigid ribs that are spaced apart along the length of the collector. The structure of the trough is held rigid by a unique sun-tracking system that not only guides a whole of array of troughs on a field to point them toward the sun, but also maintains the whole length of each trough in rigid configuration. It is not necessary to extend rigid metal beams along the trough to maintain the rigidity of the trough. Small-diameter cables are wrapped around rotatable pipes that extend along the east and west sides of the field. The cables extend over the field of the troughs and are attached to connecting points above the troughs in such a way that when the rotatable pipes rotate, the cables move, the troughs move with them, and the cables provide the rigidity of the troughs. The troughs are supported by support posts that are driven into the ground. Since the support posts do not have to supply torque to rotate the troughs, no concrete foundations are necessary.

Thin Film Trough Solar Collector

A device for rotating solar collectors has a pulley assembly connected to an individual solar collector of a bank of such collectors for rotating the collector in synchronization with the sun. Connected to the pulley assembly by a flexible member is a drive arrangement including a rigid drive rod mounted for reciprocating movement perpendicular to the extent of a shaft on which the collector is journaled. The flexible member is disposed about a non-circular track provided on the pulley assembly and secured to the drive rod for rotating the pulley as a function of movement of the drive rod.
