Aspects of the invention provide a transport system powered by short block Linear Synchronous Motors (LSMs). The use of short blocks allows vehicles to move under precise control even when they are in close proximity to each other. The design allows the vehicles to be propelled and guided while negotiating sharp turns and negotiating merge and diverge switches. A coreless LSM can be used to create propulsive force without attractive force so as to allow a relatively high drag vehicle suspension, such as a vehicle sliding on a smooth surface.

The invention relates to a unipolar transverse flux machine in which the stator (11) and the rotor (12) have the same number of identical stator modules (14) and rotor modules (15) in order to attain a modular construction that is advantageous with regard to manufacturing technology. The rotor modules (15) are mounted in an aligned manner on the rotor shaft (13), and the stator modules (14) are rotated in opposite directions around an angle of rotation inside the housing (10). The angle of rotation of two stator modules (14) is 90° electric and the angle of rotation of m stator modules (14) is 360°/m electric, whereby m is an integer greater than 2. Each stator module (14) comprises a ring coil (23), which is coaxial to the rotor axis (19), U-shaped stator yokes (24) that overlap said ring coil, and magnetic return elements (25) arranged between the stator yokes. Each rotor module (15) is comprised of two rotor rings (16, 17) with outer denticulation and with a permanent magnet ring (18), which is magnetized with unipolarity toward the rotor axis (19) and which is located between said rotor rings.

A brushless dc permanent magnet motor drives an autonomous underwater vehe. In one embodiment, the motor comprises four substantially flat stators in stacked relationship, with pairs of the stators axially spaced, each of the stators comprising a tape-wound stator coil, and first and second substantially flat rotors disposed between the spaced pairs of stators. Each of the rotors includes an annular array of permanent magnets embedded therein. A first shaft is connected to the first rotor and a second, concentric shaft is connected to the second rotor, and a drive unit causes rotation of the two shafts in opposite directions. The second shaft comprises a hollow tube having a central bore in which the first shaft is disposed. Two different sets of bearings support the first and second shafts. In another embodiment, the motor comprises two ironless stators and pairs of rotors mounted on opposite sides of the stators and driven by counterrotating shafts.

The invention relates to an alternating current motor comprising a rotor having an exciter part arranged therein and a stator having two fixed armature coils wherein each of the coils is surrounded on three sides by U-shaped soft iron elements forming the stator poles and air gap. The free ends of the soft iron elements are shifted by one pole division against one another. A series of soft iron blocks form the exciter poles with the polarity of the poles alternating along the direction of rotation. Between the soft iron blocks of the rotor exciter part are arranged permanent magnets magnetized with alternating polarity wherein the face surface of the permanent magnets lying opposite the soft iron blocks is greater than half the face surface of the exciter poles formed by the soft iron blocks on the air gap.

In known transverse flux machines the losses in the magnetically soft body prevent an increase in efficiency. Whilst the production of the winding is remarkable owing to its simplicity, the production of the laminated iron body conveying the magnetic flux incurs high costs. In addition to the saturation in the iron, the use of air gaps restricts any increase in power density. According to the invention the two air gaps (21) are disposed radially externally of the winding (15) and the magnetically hard and/or soft rotor parts (19, 20), which periodically close the magnetic circuit, are disposed axially within the ends of the magnetically soft stator body (18). This air gap arrangement gives rise to an air gap surface which is large relative to the external dimensions and the mass of the machine, and also relieves the load on the housing. Owing to the segmentation of this U-shaped stator body, material wastage during production is minimized and grain-oriented metal sheets can be used which, owing to their favourable properties, enable the efficiency and power density to be increased. Segments of identical construction can be used in machines having different dimensions and power data. The type of construction according to the invention simultaneously reduces costs, weight and losses in transverse flux machines.

The transversal flux machine has a rotor (R) attached to a rotor shaft (W) and a stator with a stator body (T) and 2 annular flux collectors (S'.S'') for each magnetic circuit, on either side of an annular winding (W',W''). The radial length of the air-gaps between the stator and each half of the 2-part rotor is more than 1 % of the mean rotor diameter, with the pole spacing and the permanent magnet thickness respectively provided by 10 and 5 times the length of the airgap. The rotor has a double cylindrical rotor body (R') with recesses for the pole elements (E',E'').

The motor coilless rotor generates magnetic field by permanent magnets so that the magnetic flux permeates the motor air gap in an axial direction. The centrifugal force imparted to the rotor permanent mannets is taken up by a non-magnetic ring outside the magnets. The polyphase stator winding has salient coils with its radial conductors lying in the magnetic field. Ferromagnetic packing is used to improve permeability in the region of the magnetic field.

Electrical machine having an annular winding armature and permanently excited rotors

Coil tracks (RW1, RW2, RW3) in the stator (S) are in the form of coaxial annular coils around the machine axis and supplied via electronic control elements. Circumferential series of ferrite elements in the stator (S) are evenly spaced from each other, extend perpendicular to the tracks (RW1, RW2. RW3), have groove-type recesses and run through the tracks (RW1, 2, 3). The rotor (R) has sections associated with the individual tracks which have the same number or twice as many flux guiding elements as there are stators (S). At least two stator/rotor units are provided adjacent each other. The magnetic functional units of the rotor circuit are arranged on cylindrical extensions common to the whole rotor (R) and which may be non-magnetic. The stators have ferrite elements on at least two sides which surround the coil in the direction of movement. The axial expansion of these corresponds to the radial height of the rotor elements which is not much greater than the groove width. ADVANTAGE - Allows very high rotor speed and high power density with both small and large machine diameters.
