The deformation behavior of as-sintered CNTs/Al-4Cu composite was investigated by isothermal compression tests, which were performed among temperature range of 573–823 K and strain rate range of 0.001–10 s−1 with Gleeble-3500 thermal simulator system, and the height reduction was 60%. The flow stress–strain curves and the processing maps at strain of 0.1–0.6 were used to characterize the deformation behavior of as-sintered CNTs/ Al-4Cu composite, the microstructures of the deformed specimens were also observed in this paper. The results show that the flow stress increases with the strain rate at a setting deformation temperature and decreases with temperature at a setting strain rate, the flow stress increases rapidly with the increase of the strain due to dislocation generation. The strain does have a little influence on the processing maps, the optimum processing domain is the temperature range of 620−660 K and the strain rate range of 0.06−0.3 s−1, and the peak efficiency of power dissipation at a strain of 0.5 is about 33%.

Only within the last couple of years, complete isothermal sections for the Al-Ti-Zr system have been determined. Up to then there had been several investigations, but these were limited to the Ti-Zr and Ti-Al sides and the Ti- and Al corners of the system. Also recently the system has been evaluated by thermodynamic ab initio calculations and CALPHAD-type (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) modelling. As Al-Ti-Zr alloys are of interest for a variety of applications and as the last assessment has been performed more than 15 years ago, this new critical evaluation of the existing literature about phase equilibria in the Al-Ti-Zr system has been performed.

Critical Assessment of the Al-Ti-Zr System

When metals are modified by second-phase particles or fibers, metal matrix composites (MMCs) are formed. In general, for a given metallic matrix, reinforcements differing in their chemical nature and particle size/morphology can be suitable while providing different levels of strengthening. This article focuses on MMCs reinforced with metallic glasses and amorphous alloys, which are considered as alternatives to ceramic reinforcements. Early works on metallic glass (amorphous alloy)-reinforced MMCs were conducted in 1982–2005. In the following years, a large number of composites have been obtained and tested. Metallic glass (amorphous alloy)-reinforced MMCs have been obtained with matrices of Al and its alloys, Mg and its alloys, Ti alloys, W, Cu and its alloys, Ni, and Fe. Research has been extended to new compositions, new design approaches and fabrication methods, the chemical interaction of the metallic glass with the metal matrix, the influence of the reaction products on the properties of the composites, strengthening mechanisms, and the functional properties of the composites. These aspects are covered in the present review. Problems to be tackled in future research on metallic glass (amorphous alloy)-reinforced MMCs are also identified.
