A cache handoff system for managing cacheable streaming content requested by a mobile node within a network architecture is disclosed. The network architecture includes a first subnet and a second subnet. The cache handoff system includes a first caching proxy operable in the first subnet to supply a content stream in response to a request of the mobile node operable in the first subnet. In addition, the cache handoff system includes a second caching proxy operable in the second subnet. The first caching proxy may initiate a cache handoff of the request to the second caching proxy when the mobile node relocates to the second subnet. The second caching proxy may seamlessly continue to supply the requested content stream as a function of the cache handoff.

A method, system and computer program product for providing translated web content is disclosed. The method includes receiving a request from a user on a web site, the web site having a first web content in a first language, wherein the request calls for a second web content in a second language. The method further includes dividing the first web content into a plurality of translatable components and generating a unique identifier for each translatable component. The method further includes identifying a plurality of translated components of the second web content using the unique identifier of each of the plurality of translatable components of the first web content and putting the plurality of translated components of the second web content to preserve a format that corresponds to the first web content. The method further includes providing the second web content in response to the request that was received.

Dynamic Language Translation of Web Site Content

A method and apparatus for the automatic migration of data via a distributed computer network allows a customer to select content files that are to be transferred to a group of edge servers. Origin sites store all of a customer's available content files. An edge server maintains a dynamic number of popular files in its memory for the customer. The files are ranked from most popular to least popular and when a file has been requested from an edge server a sufficient number of times to become more popular than the lowest popular stored file, the file is obtained from an origin site. The edge servers are grouped into two service levels: regional and global. The customer is charged a higher fee to store its popular files on the global edge servers compared to a regional set of edge servers because of greater coverage.

One embodiment of the invention includes a method (1300) for managing a streaming media service. The method includes receiving (1302) a request (1004) for a streaming media service from a client (1002). The streaming media service includes a plurality of media services components (1020). Additionally, the method includes determining (1304) which media service component of the plurality of media services components to assign to a service node (1022) of a plurality of service nodes of a network (1212). The method also includes informing (1306) each service node assigned to perform a media service components enabling the streaming media service to be performed on a streaming media (1032).

Method for managing a streaming media service

With the wide availability of high-speed network access, we are experiencing high quality streaming media delivery over the Internet. The emergence of ubiquitous computing enables mobile users to access the Internet with their laptops, PDAs, or even cell phones. When nomadic users connect to the network via wireless links or phone lines, high quality video transfer can be problematic due to long delay or size mismatch between the application display and the screen. Our proposed solution to this problem is to enable network proxies with the transcoding capability, and hence provide different, appropriate video quality to different network environment. The proxies in our transcoding-enabled caching (TeC) system perform transcoding as well as caching for efficient rich media delivery to heterogeneous network users. This design choice allows us to perform content adaptation at the network edges. We propose three different TeC caching strategies. We describe each algorithm and discuss its merits and shortcomings. We also study how the user access pattern affects the performance of TeC caching algorithms and compare them with other approaches. We evaluate TeC performance by conducting two types of simulation. Our first experiment uses synthesized traces while the other uses real traces derived from an enterprise media server logs. The results indicate that compared with the traditional network caches, with marginal transcoding load, TeC improves the cache effectiveness, decreases the user-perceived latency, and reduces the traffic between the proxy and the content origin server.

Caching strategies in transcoding-enabled proxy systems for streaming media distribution networks

Content delivery networks (CDNs) can be viewed as application-specific overlay networks that make web caching an infrastructure service accessible to any content provider. As the Internet continues to evolve with increasing diversity and heterogeneity, we see a growing demand for extending the capabilities of network intermediaries to provide additional services such as content adaptation, personalization, watermarking and location-aware data insertion. A content services network (CSN) is proposed in this paper to make content transformation and processing an infrastructure service accessible to its subscribers. One can think of CSN as another layer of network infrastructure built around CDNs. This layer interacts collaboratively with user-agents, content servers, and other network intermediaries including ISPs’ caching proxies and CDNs’ surrogates in the content delivery process to provide value-added services. Furthermore, a CSN provides network resources that are used as a “service” distribution channel for value-added services providers to make their applications an infrastructure service. To demonstrate the utility of our proposed CSN model, we describe the prototype implementation of a video segmentation and keyframe selection system as an infrastructure service that can be used by content providers or end users to enhance the way video is delivered over the Internet.
