A wideband complexity-enhanced chaos generation scheme is proposed by using a semiconductor laser subject to delay-interfered self-phase-modulated optical feedback. The influences of feedback strength, phase modulation index, and interference delay on the effective bandwidth and time-delay-signature (TDS) characteristics of the proposed scheme-generated chaos are extensively investigated both experimentally and numerically. The results demonstrate that with the joint effects of phase modulation-induced spectrum expansion and nonlinear filtering of delayed interference, wideband chaos with flat spectrum and excellent TDS suppression characteristics can be generated over a wide dynamic operation range. In comparisons with the relevant chaos generation schemes under conventional optical feedback, individual self-phase modulated optical feedback, and delay-interfered optical feedback, the proposed scheme cannot only significantly enhance the effective bandwidth of chaos but also considerably enhance the complexity of chaos by suppressing the TDS toward an indistinguishable level close to 0.

We propose a wideband chaos generation scheme that shows significant bandwidth enhancement and excellent time delay signature (TDS) suppression, by introducing self-phase modulation in the feedback loop of external-cavity semiconductor laser (ECSL) and passing the ECSL-generated chaos through a dispersive component. Proof-of-concept experiment and thorough complementary numerical simulations are carried out to study the efficient bandwidth and TDS characteristics of the generated chaos. The results demonstrate that with the joint contributions of self-phase modulation and dispersion, the efficient bandwidth of chaos can be enhanced by several times and the spectrum gets much flatter. Simultaneously, the TDS can be completely suppressed, in a wide operation parameter range. The proposed wideband chaos generation scheme shows great potential for the applications of fast random bit generation, high-resolution chaotic radar, and high-speed chaos communication.

Wideband Time Delay Signature-Suppressed Chaos Generation Using Self-Phase-Modulated Feedback Semiconductor Laser Cascaded With Dispersive Component

Microwave photonics (MWP) is an interdisciplinary field that combines two different areas of microwave engineering and photonics. It has several key features by transferring signals between the optical domain and microwave domain, which leads to the advantages of broad operation bandwidth for generation, processing and distribution of microwave signals and high resolution for optical spectrum measurement. In this paper, we comprehensively review past and current status of MWP in China by introducing the representative works from most of the active MWP research groups. Future prospective is also discussed from the national strategy to key enabling technology that we have developed.

Recent advances in microwave photonics

Time delay signature (TDS) of a semiconductor laser subject to dispersive optical feedback from a chirped fibre Bragg grating (CFBG) is investigated experimentally and numerically. Different from mirror, CFBG provides additional frequency-dependent delay caused by dispersion, and thus induces external-cavity modes with irregular mode separation rather than a fixed separation induced by mirror feedback. Compared with mirror feedback, the CFBG feedback can greatly depress and even eliminate the TDS, although it leads to a similar quasi-period route to chaos with increases of feedback. In experiments, by using a CFBG with dispersion of 2000ps/nm, the TDS is decreased by 90% to about 0.04 compared with mirror feedback. Furthermore, both numerical and experimental results show that the TDS evolution is quite different: the TDS decreases more quickly down to a lower plateau (even background noise level of autocorrelation function) and never rises again. This evolution tendency is also different from that of FBG feedback, of which the TDS first decreases to a minimal value and then increases again as feedback strength increases. In addition, the CFBG feedback has no filtering effects and does not require amplification for feedback light.

Time delay signature elimination of chaos in a semiconductor laser by dispersive feedback from a chirped FBG.

We present an optically coupled chaotic system involving three-phase modulated electro-optic nonlinear loops and an optical coupler. The dynamical properties and the time delay signature (TDS) suppressing performance of the system is analyzed in detail. Numerical results show that the TDS can be suppressed not only under statistical analysis of a single output, but also under mutual statistical analysis of the multiple outputs. Compared with the intensity modulated electrically coupled scheme, the presented system has less interior noise due to the simpler construction.

An Optically Coupled Electro-Optic Chaos System With Suppressed Time-Delay Signature

An ultrawideband (UWB) radar system for remote ranging based onmicrowave-photonic chaotic signal generation and fiber-optic distribution is proposedand demonstrated experimentally. In this system, an optical-feedback semiconductorlaser with optical injection in the central office generates photonic UWB chaos as probingsignal, and two single-mode fibers transport the optical signal to the remote antennamonitoring terminal and return the corresponding echoed signal back to the centraloffice. In the remote antenna terminal, the photonic signal is transformed into microwavechaos by a fast photodetector and then launched to target by a transmitting antenna,and the echoed signal received by another antenna is converted into optical domain bymodulating a laser diode. The target ranging is achieved at the central office by correlat-ing the echoed signal with the reference signal. We experimentally realize a detectionrange of 8 m, for a free-space target, after 24-km remote distance, and achieve a rang-ing resolution of 3 cm for single target and 8 cm for double targets. In another fiber linkbranch with 15-km fiber transmission, we obtained the 2-cm ranging resolution for asingle target.Index Terms: Chaos, remote radar, semiconductor lasers.
