What Video Games Have to Teach Us about Learning and Literacy

Educational data mining (EDM) is an emerging interdisciplinary research area that deals with the development of methods to explore data originating in an educational context. EDM uses computational approaches to analyze educational data in order to study educational questions. This paper surveys the most relevant studies carried out in this field to date. First, it introduces EDM and describes the different groups of user, types of educational environments, and the data they provide. It then goes on to list the most typical/common tasks in the educational environment that have been resolved through data-mining techniques, and finally, some of the most promising future lines of research are discussed.

Educational Data Mining: A Review of the State of the Art

Ease of use and usefulness are believed to be fundamental in determining the acceptance and use of various, corporate ITs. These beliefs, however, may not explain the user’s behavior toward newly emerging ITs, such as the World-Wide-Web (WWW). In this study, we introduce playfulness as a new factor that reflects the user’s intrinsic belief in WWW acceptance. Using it as an intrinsic motivation factor, we extend and empirically validate the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) for the WWW context. # 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Beyond the Usefulness and Ease of Use : Extending the TAM for a World - Wide - Web Context

Augmented reality (AR) technology is mature for creating learning experiences for K-12 (pre-school, grade school, and high school) educational settings. We reviewed the applications intended to complement traditional curriculum materials for K-12. We found 87 research articles on augmented reality learning experiences (ARLEs) in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library and other learning technology publications. Forty-three of these articles conducted user studies, and seven allowed the computation of an effect size to the performance of students in a test. In our meta-analysis, research show that ARLEs achieved a widely variable effect on student performance from a small negative effect to a large effect, with a mean effect size of 0.56 or moderate effect. To complement this finding, we performed a qualitative analysis on the design aspects for ARLEs: display hardware, software libraries, content authoring solutions, and evaluation techniques. We explain that AR incur three inherent advantages: real world annotation, contextual visualization, and vision-haptic visualization. We illustrate these advantages through the exemplifying prototypes, and ground these advantages to multimedia learning theory, experiential learning theory, and animate vision theory. Insights from this review are aimed to inform the design of future ARLEs.

Augmented Reality Learning Experiences: Survey of Prototype Design and Evaluation

With the rapid development of distance learning and the XML technology, metadata play an important role in e-Learning. Nowadays, many distance learning standards, such as SCORM, AICC CMI, IEEE LTSC LOM and IMS, use metadata to tag learning materials. However, most metadata models are used to define learning materials and test problems. Few metadata models are dedicated to assessment. In this paper, the authors propose an assessment metadata model for e-Learning operations. With support from assessment metadata, we can incorporate measured aspects of the following list into the metadata description at the question cognition level, the item difficulty index, the item discrimination index, the questionnaire style and the question style. The assessment analysis model provides analytical suggestions for individual questions, summary of test results and cognition analysis. Analytical suggestions provide teachers information about why a question is not appropriate. Summary of test results improves the teacher's view of student learning status immediately. Items missing from the teaching materials can be identified by cognition analysis. In this research, the authors propose an enhanced metadata model and an implemented system based on our model. With metadata support, metadata can help teachers in authoring examination.

Enhancing SCORM Metadata for Assessment Authoring in E-Learning

Bloom's taxonomy plays a role in defining the learning objectives. Some teachers also use it to design the test sheet for matching Bloom's taxonomy and analysis the result after exam. We designed an online test system supporting Bloom's taxonomy automatic analysis system. In the pilot experiment, fourteen keywords for Bloom's taxonomy and 288 test items are applied. We found “Knowledge” cognition level has 75% correct match percentage.

E-learning communities have recently started to emphasize the need to make e-learning systems more practical rather than more powerful. Related studies indicate that the appeal of learning content as well as participation in learning activities are primary concerns. The authors propose using advanced ubiquitous technologies to construct a location-aware, digital game-based learning environment. This framework presents the notion of a ubiquitous game-based learning model from technical and experimental viewpoints. An example of the courseware for a class on Tamsui, Taiwan's historical culture demonstrates the learning scenario's viability in the proposed environment.

Game-Based Learning with Ubiquitous Technologies

In order to reuse and integrate all resources, many distance learning standards have appeared. The most famous is the Shareable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM). SCORM is composed of a run-time environment (RTE), a content agreement model and LMS. SOAP allows objects or code of any kind, on any platform, in any language to communicate. .Net Web Service combines XML and some programming IDE to develop a server, which uses SOAP to implement the launch mechanism and AICC CMI data model. Java script is used to implement the client side.
