Microstructures and properties of high-entropy alloy films and coatings: a review

High-entropy alloy (HEA) coatings of AlCoCrFeNiTix (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0) were fabricated on AISI1045 steel by laser cladding. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) was used to investigate the phase composition of the coatings. The microstructure of coatings was analyzed using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). X-Ray diffraction (XRD) was used to investigate the phase composition of the coatings. The potentiodynamic polarization behaviour of coatings and substrate was studied. The composition of passive film on the corroded surface of the coating was identified by X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The phase composition analysis showed that the coating was mainly composed of disordered body-centered cubic (BCC) solid solution phase (Fe-Cr) and ordered BCC phase (Al-Ni). The microstructure of the coatings was mainly composed of equiaxed polygonal grains, micro-nano particles of TiC and nanoparticles of Al2O3. The spinodal decomposition structure of Fe-Cr enrichment and Al-Ni-Ti enrichment was found in grains. The introduction of Ti led to passivation behavior of the coating during corrosion process. The components of the passive film were Al2O3, TiO2, Ti2O3, Cr2O3 and Cr(OH)3. The AlCoCrFeNiTi HEA coating showed the best corrosion resistance.

Microstructural characterization and corrosion behaviour of AlCoCrFeNiTix high-entropy alloy coatings fabricated by laser cladding

Laves phases with their comparably simple crystal structure are very common intermetallic phases and can be formed from element combinations all over the periodic table resulting in a huge number of known examples. Even though this type of phases is known for almost 100 years, and although a lot of information on stability, structure, and properties has accumulated especially during the last about 20 years, systematic evaluation and rationalization of this information in particular as a function of the involved elements is often lacking. It is one of the two main goals of this review to summarize the knowledge for some selected respective topics with a certain focus on non-stoichiometric, i.e., non-ideal Laves phases. The second, central goal of the review is to give a systematic overview about the role of Laves phases in all kinds of materials for functional and structural applications. There is a surprisingly broad range of successful utilization of Laves phases in functional applications comprising Laves phases as hydrogen storage material (Hydraloy), as magneto-mechanical sensors and actuators (Terfenol), or for wear- and corrosion-resistant coatings in corrosive atmospheres and at high temperatures (Tribaloy), to name but a few. Regarding structural applications, there is a renewed interest in using Laves phases for creep-strengthening of high-temperature steels and new respective alloy design concepts were developed and successfully tested. Apart from steels, Laves phases also occur in various other kinds of structural materials sometimes effectively improving properties, but often also acting in a detrimental way.

Laves phases: a review of their functional and structural applications and an improved fundamental understanding of stability and properties

AlxCoCrFeNi (x = 03, 06 and 085) high entropy alloy (HEA) claddings were produced by coaxial direct laser deposition (DLD) on a 253MA austenitic steel substrate using a mixture of blended elemental powders The effect of key processing variables on the formation of HEA claddings and the compositional mixing between the deposited layer and the substrate was investigated through a three-level parametric study on laser power, laser scanning speed, laser beam size, powder feeding rate and hatch distance Using selected parameters, HEA claddings mostly free of defects were successfully manufactured with very minimal dilution With an increase in the Al mole fraction from 03 to 06 and 085, the HEA claddings displayed an evolution of crystal structure from FCC, to FCC + BCC and BCC, accompanied by an increase in microhardness The increased Al content also resulted in reduced microstructural stability of the coatings and hence higher level of thermal softening upon isothermal treatment at 1000 °C

Reciprocating sliding wear behavior of high entropy alloys in dry and marine environments

Alloy cladding coatings are widely prepared on the surface of tools and machines. High-entropy alloys are potential replacements of nickel-, iron-, and cobalt-base alloys in machining due to their excellent strength and toughness. In this work, CoCrFeMnNbNi HEA coating was produced on AISI 304 steel by tungsten inert gas cladding. The microstructure and wear behavior of the cladding coating were studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometer, microhardness tester, pin-on-ring wear tester, and 3D confocal laser scanning microscope. The microstructure showed up as a nanoscale lamellar structure matrix which is a face-centered-cubic solid solution and niobium-rich Laves phase. The microhardness of the cladding coating is greater than the structure. The cladding coating has excellent wear resistance under the condition of dry sliding wear, and the microploughing in the worn cladding coating is shallower and finer than the worn structure, which is related to composition changes caused by forming the nanoscale lamellar structure of Laves phase.
