Many contour-based image corner detectors are based on the curvature scale-space (CSS). We identify the weaknesses of the CSS-based detectors. First, the ldquocurvaturerdquo itself by its ldquodefinitionrdquo is very much sensitive to the local variation and noise on the curve, unless an appropriate smoothing is carried out beforehand. In addition, the calculation of curvature involves derivatives of up to second order, which may cause instability and errors in the result. Second, the Gaussian smoothing causes changes to the curve and it is difficult to select an appropriate smoothing-scale, resulting in poor performance of the CSS corner detection technique. We propose a complete corner detection technique based on the chord-to-point distance accumulation (CPDA) for the discrete curvature estimation. The CPDA discrete curvature estimation technique is less sensitive to the local variation and noise on the curve. Moreover, it does not have the undesirable effect of the Gaussian smoothing. We provide a comprehensive performance study. Our experiments showed that the proposed technique performs better than the existing CSS-based and other related methods in terms of both average repeatability and localization error.

Robust Image Corner Detection Based on the Chord-to-Point Distance Accumulation Technique

Corner detection based on gradient correlation matrices of planar curves

Corners are important features for image analysis and computer vision tasks. Local structure tensors with multiple scales are widely used in intensity-based corner detectors. In this paper, the properties of intensity variations of a step edge, L-type corner, Y- or T-type corner, X-type corner, and star-type corner are investigated. The properties that we obtained indicate that the image intensity variations of a corner are not always large in all directions. The properties also demonstrate that existing structure tensor-based corner detection methods cannot depict the differences of intensity variations well between edges and corners which result in wrong corner detections. We present a new technique to extract the intensity variations from input images using anisotropic Gaussian directional derivative filters with multiple scales. We prove that the new extraction technique on image intensity variation has the ability to accurately depict the characteristics of edges and corners in the continuous domain. Furthermore, the properties of the intensity variations of step edges and corners enable us to derive a new multi-directional structure tensor with multiple scales, which has the ability to depict the intensity variation differences well between edges and corners in the discrete domain. The eigenvalues of the multi-directional structure tensor with multiple scales are used to develop a new corner detection method. Finally, the criteria on average repeatability (under affine image transformation, JPEG compression, and noise degradation), region repeatability based on the Oxford dataset, repeatability metric based on the DTU dataset, detection accuracy, and localization accuracy are used to evaluate the proposed detector against ten state-of-the-art methods. The experimental results show that our proposed detector outperforms all the other tested detectors.

Corner Detection Using Multi-directional Structure Tensor with Multiple Scales

The curvature scale space (CSS) technique is considered to be a modern tool in image processing and computer vision. direct curvature scale space (DCSS) is defined as the CSS that results from convolving the curvature of a planar curve with a Gaussian kernel directly. In this paper we present a theoretical analysis of DCSS in detecting corners on planar curves. The scale space behavior of isolated single and double corner models is investigated and a number of model properties are specified which enable us to transform a DCSS image into a tree organization and, so that corners can be detected in a multiscale sense. To overcome the sensitivity of DCSS to noise, a hybrid strategy to apply CSS and DCSS is suggested

Direct Curvature Scale Space: Theory and Corner Detection

The curvature scale-space (CSS) technique is suitable for extracting curvature features from objects with noisy boundaries. To detect corner points in a multiscale framework, Rattarangsi and Chin investigated the scale-space behavior of planar-curve corners. Unfortunately, their investigation was based on an incorrect assumption, viz., that planar curves have no shrinkage under evolution. In the present paper, this mistake is corrected. First, it is demonstrated that a planar curve may shrink nonuniformly as it evolves across increasing scales. Then, by taking into account the shrinkage effect of evolved curves, the CSS trajectory maps of various corner models are investigated and their properties are summarized. The scale-space trajectory of a corner may either persist, vanish, merge with a neighboring trajectory, or split into several trajectories. The scale-space trajectories of adjacent corners may attract each other when the corners have the same concavity, or repel each other when the corners have opposite concavities. Finally, we present a standard curvature measure for computing the CSS maps of digital curves, with which it is shown that planar-curve corners have consistent scale-space behavior in the digital case as in the continuous case.
