In studying the performance of coded communications over memoryless channels (with or without fading), the results are given as upper bounds on the average bit error probability (BEP). In principle, there are three different approaches to arriving at these bounds, all of which employ obtaining the so-called pairwise error probability , or the probability of choosing one symbol sequence over another for a given pair of possible transmitted symbol sequences, followed by a weighted summation over all pairwise events. In this chapter, we will focus on the results obtained from the third approach since these provide the tightest upper bounds on the true performance. The first emphasis will be placed on evaluating the pairwise error probability with and without CSI, following which we shall discuss how the results of these evaluations can be used via the transfer bound approach to evaluate average BEP of coded modulation transmitted over the fading channel.

Coded Communication over Fading Channels

A new multi-carrier $M$ -ary differential chaos shift keying system with code index modulation, referred to as CIM-MC- $M$ -DCSK , is proposed in this paper. In the proposed CIM-MC- $M$ -DCSK system, the reference and information-bearing signals for each subcarrier can be transmitted simultaneously by using the orthogonal sinusoidal carriers, where the information-bearing signal adopts the $M$ -DCSK modulation to further increase the data rate. With an aim to making full use of the system energy resources, the reference signals in all subcarriers are coded by a Walsh code to carry additional information bits. The analytical bit-error-rate (BER) expressions of the proposed CIM-MC- $M$ -DCSK system are derived over additive white Gaussian noise as well as multipath Rayleigh fading channels. Furthermore, a noise-reduction scheme and a hierarchical-modulation scheme are designed for the proposed system. In particular, the former scheme can significantly improve the BER performance while the latter scheme can provide different quality of service for the transmitted bits according to their different levels of importance. Simulation results verify the accuracy of the analytical expressions and the superiority of the proposed systems.

Multi-Carrier $M$ -ary DCSK System With Code Index Modulation: An Efficient Solution for Chaotic Communications

In this paper, we propose a novel scheme termed layered orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (L-OFDM-IM) to increase the spectral efficiency (SE) of OFDM-IM systems. In L-OFDM-IM, all subcarriers are first divided into multiple layers, each determining the active subcarriers and their modulated symbols. The index modulation (IM) bits are carried on the indices of the active subcarriers of all layers, which are overlapped and distinguishable with different signal constellations so that the number of the IM bits is larger than that in traditional OFDM-IM. A low-complexity detection is proposed to alleviate the high burden of the optimal maximum-likelihood detection at the receiver side. A closed-form upper bound on the bit error rate, the achievable rate, and diversity order are derived to characterize the performance of L-OFDM-IM. To enhance the diversity performance of L-OFDM-IM, we further propose coordinate interleaving L-OFDM-IM (CI-L-OFDM-IM), which interleaves the real and imaginary parts of the modulated symbols over two different subchannels. Computer simulations verify the theoretical analysis, and results show that L-OFDM-IM outperforms the conventional OFDM-IM scheme. Moreover, it is also confirmed that CI-L-OFDM-IM obtains an additional diversity order in comparison with L-OFDM-IM.

Layered Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing With Index Modulation

Code index modulated multi-carrier M -ary differential chaos shift keying (CIM-MC- M -DCSK) system not only inherits low-power and low-complexity advantages of the conventional DCSK system, but also significantly increases the transmission rate. This feature is of particular importance to Internet of Things (IoT) with trillions of low-cost devices. In particular, for e-health IoT applications, an efficient transmission scheme is designed to solve the challenge of the limited battery capacity for numerous user equipments served by one base station. In this paper, a new multiple-input-single-output simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (MISO-SWIPT) scheme for CIM-MC- M -DCSK system is proposed by utilizing orthogonal characteristic of chaotic signals with different initial values. The proposed system adopts power splitting mode, which is very promising for simultaneously providing energy and transmitting information of the user equipments without any external power supply. In particular, the new system can achieve desirable anti-multipath-fading capability without using channel estimator. Moreover, the analytical bit-error-rate expression of the proposed system is derived over multipath Rayleigh fading channels. Furthermore, the spectral efficiency and energy efficiency of the proposed system are analyzed. Simulation results not only validate the analytical expressions, but also demonstrate the superiority of the proposed system.

Design of an MISO-SWIPT-Aided Code-Index Modulated Multi-Carrier M -DCSK System for e-Health IoT

Quadrature spatial modulation (QSM) is recently proposed to increase the spectral efficiency (SE) of SM, which extends the transmitted symbols into in-phase and quadrature domains. In this paper, we propose a generalized QSM (GQSM) scheme to further increase the SE of QSM by activating more than one transmit antenna in in-phase or quadrature domain. A low-complexity detection scheme for GQSM is provided to mitigate the detection burden of the optimal maximum-likelihood (ML) detection method. An upper bounded bit error rate is analyzed to discover the system performance of GQSM. Moreover, by collaborating with the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique, we investigate the practical application of GQSM to cooperative vehicular networks and propose the cooperative GQSM with OMA (C-OMA-GQSM) and cooperative GQSM with NOMA (C-NOMA-GQSM) schemes. Computer simulation results verify the reliability of the proposed low-complexity detection as well as the theoretical analysis, and show that GQSM outperforms QSM in the entire SNR region. The superior BER performance of the proposed C-NOMA-GQSM scheme make it a promising modulation candidate for next generation vehicular networks.

Generalized Quadrature Spatial Modulation and its Application to Vehicular Networks With NOMA

Multiple-mode orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (MM-OFDM-IM), which transmits an OFDM signal with information bits embedded onto multiple distinguishable signal constellations of the same cardinality and their permutations, is a recently proposed IM technique in the frequency domain. It is capable of achieving higher spectral efficiency and better error performance than classical OFDM and existing frequency-domain IM schemes. In this paper, we propose the scheme of generalized (G-) MM-OFDM-IM, which allows a different subcarrier to utilize a signal constellation of a different size while conveying the same number of IM bits. Considering phase shift keying constellations, we present design guidelines for GMM-OFDM-IM to achieve an optimal error performance in the asymptotically high signal-to-noise ratio region. A computationally efficient and near-optimal detector based on the idea of sequential decoding is also tailored to GMM-OFDM-IM, which avoids the detection of an illegitimate constellation permutation. Monte Carlo simulations are conducted to validate the inherent properties and advantages of GMM-OFDM-IM.

Generalized Multiple-Mode OFDM With Index Modulation

There is a recent surge of research interest in the study of performance-enhancing techniques for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based relay systems. Among those, subcarrier mapping has been verified to be an effective one for boosting the system capacity and improving the error performance. However, it has to be performed at the relay, which subsequently conveys the subcarrier permutation information to the destination. The existing signaling scheme occupies a portion of subcarriers to this end, leading to a loss of spectral efficiency. In this paper, we propose a novel signaling scheme to eliminate this overhead by transferring the subcarrier permutation to the mode permutation that can be implicitly conveyed without consuming additional spectrum resources. We adopt phase rotation for mode design considering both non-adaptive and adaptive modulation, and illustrate the proposed scheme by taking the dual-hop OFDM relaying with semi-blind amplify-and-forward protocol as an example. An asymptotically tight upper bound on the bit error rate (BER) of the proposed scheme is derived in closed-form over Rayleigh fading channels. BER simulation results validate the analysis and show that the proposed scheme asymptotically approaches the ideal case that assumes perfect knowledge of subcarrier permutation information at the destination and significantly outperforms the existing scheme in the asymptotic signal-to-noise ratio region at the same spectral efficiency.
