Primary productivity of the biosphere

In a world of increasing atmospheric CO2, there is intensified interest in the ecophysiology of photosynthesis and more attention is being given to other aspects of carbon exchange and storage in natural ecosystems. For example, how much will the photosynthesis of terrestrial and aquatic vegetation change as global CO2 increases? Are there major ecosystems, such as the boreal forests, which may become important sinks of CO2 and slow down the effects of anthropogenic CO2 emissions on climate? This volume reviews the progress which has been made in understanding photosynthesis in the past few decades at several levels of integration, from the molecular level to canopy, ecosystem and global scales.

Ecophysiology of Photosynthesis

The CO2 exchange response of plants to multiple environmental variables is often difficult to frame for purposes of comparison. In this paper, a nonlinear model relating CO2 exchange to light and temperature is derived from experimental curves determined in other investigations. Parameter values, determined from a least-squares fit of the model to CO2 exchange data, are useful for comparing responses to light and temperature in terms of seasonal phenology, population heterogeneity, or species variation. The model was fitted to CO2 exchange data of a group of 40 Alnus rubra Bong. (red alder) seedlings for steady-state combinations of light and temperature. The average deviation of the data from the model was ±6.7%. This steady-state expression satisfactorily predicted CO2 exchange for dynamic conditions of light and temperature occurring in a diurnal cycle.

Stomatal apertures are the major pathway for the movement of CO2 from the atmosphere into the mesophyll of leaves. The presence of this pathway for the movement of gases also results in water loss from the hydrated surfaces within leaves to the atmosphere. Stomatal aperture appears to be controlled by complex mechanisms which operate to maintain a variable balance between allowing CO2 uptake to proceed, while restricting the loss of water vapor, and preventing leaf desiccation. Recent reviews have examined the physiological bases of stomatal function (Raschke 1979; Allaway and Milthorpe 1976) and stomatal responses to environment (Sheriff 1979; Burrows and Milthorpe 1976; Hall et al. 1976). Analyses which integrated stomatal effects on CO2 exchange, transpiration, and energy balance were developed based upon theory (Cowan 1977), which have led to hypotheses concerning optimal stomatal function (see Chap. 17, this Vol.; Cowan and Farquhar 1977). However, information concerning the simultaneous responses of stomata, water loss, and CO2 assimilation rates has not been reviewed for plants in natural environments.

Experimentell-ökologische Untersuchungen an Flechten der Negev-Wüste: II. CO2-Gaswechsel und Wasserhaushalt von Ramalina maciformis (Del.) Bory am natürlichen Standort während der sommerlichen Trockenperiode

Carbon dioxide exchange and transpiration measurements of various wild and cultivated plants were carried out during the dry summer period in 1967 in the Central Negev Desert (Israel). A mobile laboratory used for these investigations is described. Measurements were carried out with conditioned plant chambers which followed either the ambient temperature and humidity or else allowed the experiments to be carried out under constant conditions. The accuracy of the measurements was estimated. The mean error of the determination of the CO2 exchange rate amounts to ±0.07 mg CO2·g-1·h-1. Transpiration rate is measured with an error of ±0.15 g H2O·g-1·h-1. The response time of the instrumentation to reach 90% equilibrium after a change in photosynthesis or transpiration is 7 to 9 minutes. Errors which are caused by changes of quality of incident radiant energy and altered turbulence conditions for the leaves enclosed in the chamber, are discussed.

CO2-Gaswechsel und Wasserhaushalt von Pflanzen in der Negev-Wüste am Ende der Trockenzeit

The daily course of net photosynthesis and transpiration was measured with temperature and humidity controlled cuvettes at the end of the dry summer season in the Negev Desert. Species studied included: dominant species of the natural vegetation, cultivated plants in the run-off farm Avdat and permanently irrigated plants. An analysis of the influence of single climatic factors on gas exchange was given in part II of this publication. The reactions of the plants to complex changes in all the environmental parameters is the subject of this present study.
