Screening of plant growth promoting traits in heavy metals resistant bacteria: Prospects in phytoremediation.

Biosorption is an effective method to remove heavy metals from wastewater. In this work, Biosorption of Cr(VI) has been investigated by live and dead cells of three yeasts species: Cyberlindnera fabianii, Wickerhamomyces anomalus and Candida tropicalis. Sorption experiments were conducted in aqueous solutions at various pH conditions. Cr(VI) adsorption was highly pH dependent and the results indicated that the most effective pH range was found to be between 2 and 4 for the three species. Adsorption isotherms were modeled with the Langmuir and Freundlich equations and isotherm constants were calculated. The adsorption capacity calculated from Langmuir isotherm was 18.9 mg, 28.14 mg and 29.1 mg Cr(VI) g−1 Cr(VI) g−1 for C. fabianii, W. anomalus and C. tropicalis, respectively. The results suggest that the three yeasts could be used as effective adsorbents for the removal of Cr(VI) ions from contaminated sites.

Chromium Adsorption by Three Yeast Strains Isolated from Sediments in Morocco

Hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) is a widespread environmental contaminant. Many microorganisms have been reported to detoxify hexavalent chromium. The present work is the first report of a strain of Enterococcus having the ability of resistance to and reduction of Cr(VI). This strain was isolated from tannery waste-contaminated soil and identified as Enterococcus gallinarum, by biochemical methods and 16S rDNA analysis. The strain also exhibited multiple heavy metals (Cu2+, Ni 2+, Pb2+, Co2+ and Zn2+) tolerance. It was found to reduce chromate to 100% at a concentration of 200 mg l-1, in aerobic conditions. The cells reduced Cr(VI) under a wide range of temperatures (25-45°C) and pH (7–11) with optimum at 37°C and initial pH 10. The presence of other metals, such as Cu2+, stimulated Cr(VI) reduction, while Pb2+ and Ni 2+ had no significant effect on reduction ability by the strain. Assay with resting and permeabilized cells (treated with toluene and Triton X-100) demonstrated that the reduction of Cr(VI) is mediated by cell membrane bound or soluble proteins of the cell. The results obtained in this study have significance for the bioremediation of chromate pollution.

Cr(VI) reduction by Enterococcus gallinarum isolated from tannery waste-contaminated soil

Heavy metal pollution has become one of the most serious environmental problems throughout the world. Among the innovative solutions for treatment of contaminated water and soil, bioremediation that use biological materials like living or dead microorganisms is a promising, safe and economical technology. One of the most ubiquitous biomass types available for bioremediation of heavy metals is yeast. Yeast cells represent an inexpensive, readily available source of biomass that retains its removal ability for a broad range of heavy metals to varying degrees. Furthermore, yeasts exhibit the ability to adapt to extreme conditions such as temperature, pH and high levels of organic and inorganic contaminants. To understand the different mechanisms of interactions between metals and yeast strains in the environment, this paper will give an overview on the role that yeasts play in the immobilization/mobilization of toxic metals and factors affecting these processes. Biotechnological applications in the bioremediation of heavy metal such as bioaugmentation using degradation abilities of yeasts will also be discussed.
