A pressure applicator for applying pressure to a flowable implant material, e.g., PMMA. A pressure applicator or driver includes a pair of columns which are engageable with one another, preferably by threads to generate a driving pressure. A handle is provided for the operator to grasp and steady the device as he turns the handle to apply pressure to the implantable material within the applicator. A luer-lock or other connecting device is provided for attaching the applicator to a cannula (or a connecting conduit that in turns connects with a cannula) that will deliver the implant material to the desired site. Pressures of about 1000-3000 psi may be generated by this device.

High pressure applicator

Instruments and methodology for nonlinear access to bone tissue sites are described. Embodiments disclosed include a conduit for delivering material or a medical device to a site and a core member that is able to steer the conduit and allow the combination to be advanced thorough cancellous bone. A cannula and stylet may be provided to first advance through hard bone. The core member includes a curved tip that may be straightened by the cannula or an actuator sheath to vary sweep of the curve. An obturator may be included in the system. This instrument may include a flexible portion as well. Each of the obturator and conduit may be provided with any of a variety of active tips. The systems may be used to perform hard tissue site implantation, for example, in connection with a high pressure injection system.

Bone access system

An apparatus for delivering bone cement into a vertebra includes a cannula and a mix and delivery device pivotally coupled to the cannula. The mix and deliver provides a single device in which a flowable compound may be mixed and the dispensed into the vertebrae through the cannula. The mix and delivery device includes a piston, slidably disposed within a barrel of the device, for advancing the bone cement through an outlet communicating with the cannula. An actuating device, which exerts a pressure, is connected to an inlet on the mix and delivery device (either directly or through a tube). The pressure created by the actuating device is used to advance the piston within the mix and delivery device.

Apparatus and methods for delivering compounds into vertebrae for vertebroplasty

Various adaptors are used for securing a replaceable syringe tip in operative relationship to a handpiece body. The syringe tip is mounted on a tapered male connector set in the hollow interior of the adaptor. O ring seals and a metal flange member are used to prevent the leakage of air or water passing from the handpiece into the interior of the adaptor and then into the syringe tip. A captivated thumb nut is utilized to prevent the thumb nut from accidently disengaging completely from the adaptor. When the thumb nut is loosened to replace a syringe tip, the thumb nut will remain captivated on the adapter, only loosening enough to allow removal and insertion of a syringe tip.

Apparatus for applying coatings to various surface types. The apparatus includes a reservoir (12) for holding a quantity of the coating material and a delivery tip (14) having adjustable bristles (40) at one end. The bristles are slidably secured in a spiral passageway (46) formed by a helical ridge (44) inside the delivery tip, thereby allowing the coating material to be continuously applied without the need to stop the procedure and rewet the applicator. The applicator permits accurate control of the amount of coating material applied to the surface. In this way, the surface receives neither an excessive nor an insufficient amount of the coating material. Moreover, the bristles may be pushed in to permit the coating material to be applied to a small, irregular surface, such as pits and fissures, or pulled out to permit the bristles to fan out for application to broad surface areas. Delivery of relatively viscous coating materials is made easier by providing the spiral passageway around the bristles so that the coating material does not have to flow through the bristles.

OPERATIVELY ASSOCIATED WITH THE PRE-LOADED NOZZLE IS AN APPLICATOR GUN ADAPTED TO DETACHABLY RECEIVE THE PRE-LOADED NOZZLE AND HAVING A PLUNGER FOR EFFECTING DISPLACEMENT OF THE PISTON TO EXTRUDE THE FILLING MATERIAL FROM THE CARRIER AS DESIRED.
