A carbon particulates cleaning device comprises a casing, a filter for catching and collecting carbon particulates included in the exhaust gas within the casing, an oxidizing catalyst carrier which is disposed within the casing and a fuel supply means for supplying the fuel into the interior of the casing. When the volume of the carbon particulates caught and collected by the filter reaches a predetermined volume, the fuel is supplied from the fuel supply means into the interior of the casing and burnt by the oxidization promoting action of the oxidizing catalyst. And the caught and collected carbon particulates are burnt and cleaned due to the burning heat of the fuel.

A selective catalytic reduction system for engine exhaust injects a source of ammonia, preferably an aqueous urea solution, or other ammonia solution, to preferably evaporate, decompose and hydrolyze to produce ammonia to react with and reduce NOx in the exhaust. A turbulence generator between the injector and a downstream catalyst enhances ammonia mixing upstream of the catalyst. A perforated reflector between the injector and the catalyst passes the exhaust through the perforations and reflects exhaust back toward the injector, to generate the turbulence to achieve enhanced ammonia mixing. A low pressure generator creates a low pressure evaporative diffusion enhancement zone at the injector accelerating evaporation rate and accelerating ammonia diffusion and mixing with the exhaust.

An apparatus for modifying an exhaust stream of a diesel engine is provided. The apparatus includes a muffler arrangement having an exhaust inlet and an exhaust outlet in construct and arrange for sound attenuation therein. The apparatus also includes a catalytic converter arrangement positioned within the muffler arrangement between the exhaust inlet and exhaust outlet. During operation, the exhaust flow is directed both through the muffler arrangement and the catalytic converter arrangement, to advantage.

An exhaust aftertreatment device (10) includes an aftertreatment element (24) for treating internal combustion engine exhaust, an injector (26) for injecting chemical species mixing with the exhaust prior to reaching the aftertreatment element, and a turbulator (36) turbulating the exhaust to enhance the noted mixing. In a desired combination, a two-stage integrated perforated tube combination structure includes a turbulent mixing tube (38) disposed in an acoustic tube (40) and concentrically surrounded thereby.

Exhaust aftertreatment device, including chemical mixing and acoustic effects

An apparatus for the thermal-catalytic abatement of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and particulates from effluent gas streams. The apparatus has a preheat section wherein the effluent is heated to 400°-1000° F by hot combustion gases. The effluent and combustion gases are directed by a baffle through a filter where combustible particulates are incinerated and noncombustible particulates are collected. The baffle followed by a diffuser cone, axially located on the filter, intimately mixes the effluent with the combustion gases so as to provide uniform flow and temperature distribution of the mixed gases across the filter. The filtered gases then pass through a catalytic reactor section containing a catalyst, preferably catalyst-coated ceramic honeycombs. In the presence of the catalysts the hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide in the heated gas stream are oxidized to carbon dioxide and water and the nitrogen oxides are reduced.
