Knowledge Specialization, Organizational Coupling, and the Boundaries of the Firm: Why Do Firms Know More than They Make?

A nonlinear, physics-based model of the longitudinal dynamics for an air-breathing hypersonic vehicle is developed. The model is derived from first principles and captures a number of complex interactions between the propulsion system, aerodynamics, and structural dynamics. Unlike conventional aircraft, air-breathing hypersonic vehicles require that the propulsion system be highly integrated into the airframe. Furthermore, full-scale hypersonic aircraft tend to have very lightweight, flexible structures that have low natural frequencies. Therefore, the first bending mode of the fuselage is important, as its deflection affects the amount of airflow entering the engine, thus influencing the performance of the propulsion system. The equations of motion for the flexible aircraft are derivedusingLagrange’sequations.Theequationsof motioncaptureinertial couplingeffectsbetween thepitch and normal accelerations of the aircraft and the structural dynamics. The linearized aircraft dynamics are found to be unstableand,inmostcases,exhibitnonminimumphasebehavior.Thelinearizedmodelalsoindicatesthatthereisan aeroelastic mode that has a natural frequency more than twice the frequency of the fuselage bending mode, and the short-period mode is very strongly coupled with the bending mode of the fuselage.

A general review is presented of the worldwide evolution of ramjet propulsion since the Wright brothers e rst turned man’ s imagination to e y into a practical reality. A perspective of the technological developments from subsonic to hypersonic e ight speeds is provided to allow an appreciation for the advances made internationally from the early 1900s to current times. Ramjet, scramjet, and mixed-cycle engine types, and their operation and rationale for use are considered. The development history and principal contributing development programs are reviewed. Major airbreathing technologies that had signie cant impact on the maturation of ramjet propulsion and enabled engine designs to mature to their current state are identie ed. The general state of e ight-demonstrated technology is summarized and compared with the technology base of 1980. The current status of ramjet/scramjet technology is identie ed. Ramjet and scramjet propulsion technology has matured dramatically over the years in support of both military and space access applications, yet many opportunities remain to challenge future generations of explorers.

A Century of Ramjet Propulsion Technology Evolution

Rotating detonation engines (RDEs), also known as continuous detonation engines, have gained much worldwide interest lately. Such engines have huge potential benefits arising from their simplicity of design and manufacture, lack of moving parts, high thermodynamic efficiency and high rate of energy conversion that may be even more superior than pulse detonation engines, themselves the subject of great interest. However, due to the novelty of the concept, substantial work remains to demonstrate feasibility and bring the RDE to reality. An assessment of the challenges, ranging from understanding basic physics through utilizing rotating detonations in aerospace platforms, is provided.

Aircraft engine design

Pulse detonation engines (PDEs) are currently attracting considerable research and development attention because they promise performance improvements over existing airbreathing propulsion devices. Because of their inherently unsteady behavior, it has been difficult to conveniently classify and evaluate them relative to their steady-state counterparts. Consequently, most PDE studies employ unsteady gasdynamic calculations to determine the instantaneous pressures and forces acting on the surfaces of the device and integrate them over a cycle to determine thrust performance. A classical, closed thermodynamic cycle analysis of the PDE that is independent of time is presented. The most important result is the thermal efficiency of the PDE cycle, or the fraction of the heating value of the fuel that is converted to work that can be used to produce thrust. The cycle thermal efficiency is then used to find all of the traditional propulsion performance measures. The benefits of this approach are 1) that the fundamental processes incorporated in PDEs are clarified; 2) that direct, quantitative comparisons with other cycles (e.g., Brayton or Humphrey) are easily made; 3) that the influence of the entire ranges of the main parameters that influence PDE performance are easily explored; 4) that the ideal or upper limit of PDE performance capability is quantitatively established; and 5) that this analysis provides a basic building block for more complex PDE cycles. A comparison of cycle performance is made for ideal and real PDE, Brayton, and Humphrey cycles, utilizing realistic component loss models. The results show that the real PDE cycle has better performance than the real Brayton cycle only for flight Mach numbers less than about 3, or cycle static temperature ratios less than about 3. For flight Mach numbers greater than 3, the real Brayton cycle has better performance, and the real Humphrey cycle is an overoptimistic (and unnecessary) surrogate for the real PDE cycle.
