Journal ArticleDOI

Biochemical Correlations of Power Development and Metabolic Fuel Preferenda in Fish Hearts

TL;DR: Hearts from 16 species of fishes, including representatives of cyclostomes, elasmobranchs, and teleosts, were examined and ATP yields calculated from HK and CPT and corrected to reflect physiological conditions of the tissue suggest that catabolism of either carbohydrate or fatty acid fuels can meet maximal energetic demands of the tissues.
Book ChapterDOI

8 - Metabolism in Fish During Exercise

TL;DR: This chapter describes the biochemical events involved in the transition from a resting to an actively swimming condition, and the control of metabolism in support tissues and skeletal muscle is described.
Journal ArticleDOI

Force-velocity characteristics and metabolism of carp muscle fibres following temperature acclimation

TL;DR: It is concluded that thermal compensation of mechanical power output by carp skeletal muscle is matched by a concomitant increase in the potential to supply aerobically-generated ATP at low temperatures.
Journal ArticleDOI

Adaptations in pectoralis muscle, heart mass, and energy metabolism during premigratory fattening in semipalmated sandpipers (Calidris pusilla)

TL;DR: Total pectoralis muscle glycogen levels and the activity of pyruvate kinase increase, suggesting a higher capacity for glycogenolysis, which may be important during intense levels of energy demand.
