A magnetic resonance apparatus is provided to analyze, diagnose, or treat matter. In general, the MRA is used to transmit a synthesized resonance pattern into the subject matter under test which encounters the inherent resonance pattern produced by the tested subject matter. This information is returned to the MRA, which, after removing the static capacity and resistance, is analyzed, digitized and compared to a coded predetermined resonance pattern and examined for irregularities. The presence or lack of irregularities can be used to analyze and diagnose matter. A second set of test pattern signals can also be applied to alter the substance's natural magnetic resonance, thereby treating the substance to achieve a particular resonance pattern.

Broadband RF excitation for a Fourier transform spectrometer is obtained by synthesizing the time domain excitation from the desired frequency spectrum of RF excitation. Means are provided to Fourier transform the desired spectral data from the frequency domain into the time domain to obtain a modulation output for modulating an RF carrier signal to generate the desired sideband of RF excitation. In a preferred embodiment, the desired frequency domain data, as tabled in the computer, has a pseudorandom phase shift added to each component for scrambling the phases of the RF excitation. The excited RF resonance signals in the time domain are detected, time-averaged, Fourier transformed to the frequency domain and, in the case of phase scrambling, unscrambled by the pseudorandom phase angle sequence, and displayed.

Nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer for examination of a sample under pressure has a coolant vessel containing a radio-frequency coil cooled by coolant in the vessel while located within the magnetic field of the spectrometer. A pressurizable sample holder comprises a nonmagnetic pressure retaining tube formed of electrically insulating matrix material containing electrically insulating reinforcing filaments. The spectrometer is configured to accommodate this sample holder with the axis of the pressure retaining tube transverse to the magnetic field, and the radiofrequency coil at the exterior of the pressure retaining tube. Cooling of the coil improves the signal to noise ratio and offsets the low coil filling factor which is a consequence of placing the coil outside a non-metallic pressure retaining tube. End pieces at each end of the tube are connected together and contain longitudinal pressure stress.

The radio frequency spectrometer is disclosed employing a variable frequency audio frequency field modulator for producing a variable frequency sideband which can be stepped through the resonance line under analysis in precisely controlled small audio frequency increments under the control of a digital computer. The precisely controlled audio frequency for the modulator is derived from a radio frequency crystal and is divided by a certain divisor as determined by a computer which feeds the number into a counter which serves as the divider. The quotient output of the divider is employed to trigger a square wave generator, the output of which is filtered to produce a sinusoidal audio frequency output which is fed to the field modulator. The computer calculates new divisors for each of the successive audio frequency outputs.

A SEQUENCER OR PROGRAMMED GENERAL PURPOSE COMPUTER SEQUENCES THE SHAKING OF THE PEN.
