Condition Monitoring and Fault Diagnosis of Induction Motors: A Review

The ability of the electromagnetic flux measured in various locations of a 35-kW cage induction motor to provide useful information about faults was investigated. The usef lness of this monitoring parameter was assessed in comparison with some other electrical parameters used for fault det ection, such as stator phase current and circulatin g currents between the parallel branches of the stator winding. The following faults were investigated in this thes is: a turn-to-turn short circuit in the stator wind i g; rotor cage-related faults (breakage of rotor bars); static and dynamic eccentricity, and bearing fault. The relevant fault signatures of the studied electr ical parameters were obtained from measurements and /or from numerical electromagnetic field simulations in stea dy state. These signatures were analysed and compar ed in order to deduce the most appropriate quantity for the detect ion of a specific fault. When and where possible, t h accuracy of different fault signatures issuing from numerical e lectromagnetic field simulations was validated by e xperiments. This investigation is essential since, following a good agreement, it may be assumed that if a monitoring s ystem cannot detect and diagnose an artificial fault from the vi rtual measurement signals, it is hardly likely to w rk with real electrical machines, either. In this respect, the n umerical methods of analysis limited the present st udy o such faults that affect the electromagnetic field of a machine. On the exclusive basis of data obtained from simula tions, a study of the modifications brought by vari ous stator winding designs to some of the asymmetrical air-gap electro magnetic flux density harmonics responsible for the detection of various faults was carried out. The analysis of a core fault (insulation fault in t he stator lamination) artificially implemented in t he numerical electromagnetic model of the machine in terms of fi nding a suitable parameter to sense such a fault wa s also studied in this work.

Condition monitoring of electrical machines is recognised as being crucially important to reliable and economical plant operation, particularly in large installations. Choice of monitoring parameters is discussed. Practically viable condition monitoring schemes are proposed.

Professor Thomson has worked as electrician, R&D engineer, academic, and consultant. In 1990, he was appointed Professor at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland, for his research and development work on condition monitoring for electrical drives. He was awarded a First Class Technological Certificate in Electrical Installation work from The City & Guilds London Institute (1966), and a Higher National Certificate in Electrical Engineering (1970) Professor Thomson has a BSc (Hons, Electrical Engineering, 1973) and an MSc (1977) from the University of Strathclyde, Scotland. He is a SMIEEE and FIEE, a CEng in the UK, a visiting Professor in Electrical Engineering at the University of Abertay, Scotland, and has published over 70 papers.
