An alloy capable of forming a (100) [001] cube-texture by thermo-mechanical techniques has 5-45 atomic percent nickel with the balance being copper. The alloy is useful as a conductive substrate for superconducting composites where the substrate is coated with a superconducting oxide. A buffer layer can optionally be coated on the substrate to enhance deposition of the superconducting oxide. The method for producing the alloy can include weighing the metal (101), melting and cooling the constituents (102). The alloy can include melted (103) and shaped (104). The alloy can then be mechanically deformed to a smaller size and recrystallize (105) then deformed in an axially manner (106) and planar deformation (107). The final step is heat treated (108).

Substrates for superconductors

A improved hydrocarbon conversion process, comprising applying a plating, cladding, paint or other coating to at least a portion of a hydrocarbon conversion reactor system which is used to convert hydrocarbons to products in the presence of steam, said coating being effective to reduce the amount of undesirable by-products in said process; and operating the hydrocarbon conversion process at a steam to hydrocarbon ratio that is lower than the steam to hydrocarbon ratio at which said process was operated prior to applying said coating. Preferred hydrocarbon conversion process includes steam cracking of hydrocarbons to produce ethylene and dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene.

The resulting epitaxial layers can demonstrate various advantageous features, including low pore density and/or inclusions with small average size particle size diameter.

A process for solid-state diffusion of silicon into sheet steel containing not more than 0.05 percent carbon, the process including preparing sheet steel by conventional methods of melting, pouring and rolling, coating the surfaces of the sheet steel with a layer of powder containing about 15 percent to about 95 percent silicon and the remainder substantially calcium, iron and incidental impurities, compacting the powder onto the sheet and heat treating the composite thus formed in a protective environment to cause a solid-state diffusion of the diffusible silicon into the sheet steel.
