In order to suppress deposition of constituent of a reducing agent (dissolved matter) in an exhaust passage of an engine enhancing an elimination rate of NOx even when temperature of an exhaust emission from the engine is low, an exhaust emission purifying apparatus is provided with an electro-generative-heat carrier provided on an upstream side of an injection nozzle that supplies the reducing agent into the exhaust emission on upstream side of a reduction catalyst in an exhaust pipe, the exhaust emission being heated to a temperature equal to or higher than a melting point of the dissolved matter whereby deposition of the dissolved matter on an inner wall surface of the exhaust pipe is suppressed to effectively use the supplied reducing agent for catalytic reduction reaction, even when the exhaust emission temperature is lower than the melting point of the dissolved matter of the reducing agent.

Exhaust emission purifying apparatus for engine

To regenerate a diesel particulate filter (10) which traps particulate matter contained in the exhaust gas of a diesel engine (20), a controller (16) raises the temperature of the exhaust gas through fuel injection control of a fuel injector (23), and thus burns the particulate matter trapped in the filter (10). The controller (16) cumulatively calculates the time during which the temperature of the filter (10) exceeds a target temperature as an effective regeneration time. By estimating the amount of particulate matter remaining in the filter (10) on the basis of the effective regeneration time, the controller (16) estimates the amount of remaining particulate matter with a high degree of precision and without consuming energy, whereupon regeneration of the filter (10) through fuel injection control ends.

A catalyst (22) suitable for reduction of the NOx in an exhaust gas by ammonia in the presence of excess oxygen is arranged in the exhaust passage (18, 21) of an internal combustion engine. An aqueous urea solution is fed through a flow control valve (33) to the inside of the exhaust passage (21) upstream of the catalyst (22). When the temperature of the catalyst (22) is low, a large amount of the aqueous urea solution is fed to make the urea contained in the aqueous urea solution be stored in the catalyst (22). When the engine is accelerated and the temperature of the catalyst (22) rises, ammonia is released at a little at a time from the inside of the catalyst (22) and the NOx in the exhaust gas is reduced by the released ammonia.

An object of the invention is to provide an exhaust emission control device which eliminates the use of a heat-retention structure using heat-insulating material such as glass wool so as to attain substantial lessening in production cost. A discharge end of a gas gathering chamber is connected to an entry end of a mixing pipe so as to encase the entry end of the mixing pipe and close an opened end face in a required spaced-apart relationship. Moreover, a side surface of the entry end of the mixing pipe adjacent to the discharge side of the particulate filter is formed with an opening; and gas guide passages are formed in the gas gathering chamber by guide fins for tangential introduction of all of the exhaust gas from the discharge side of the particulate filter to the opening. An extra space isolated from the gas guide passages is ensured in the gas gathering chamber as a heat-retention chamber surrounding the entry end of the mixing pipe.
