The incidence of tuberculosis (TB) has increased worldwide in the past decade and it still remains an important global public health problem. A retrospective clinicopathological study of 1,548 cases of female genital tuberculosis between 1940 and 2011 was conducted. The mean age of the cases was 29.49 years. Involvement of the endometrium was noted in 1,073, fallopian tubes in 164, cervix in 157, and 154 had multiple organ involvement. Clinically, 115 cases (7.4%) were diagnosed as having primary infertility and 12 cases (0.8%) as having secondary infertility. There was a coexistent carcinoma in 1.5% of the cases. Peritoneal tuberculosis in 21 cases and tuberculous lymphadenitis in 7 cases were seen as well. The clinicopathological criteria of female genital tuberculosis in the different organs are described, and special attention is paid to infertility associated with tuberculous lesion, and awareness of the fact that the disease is still with us is thus particularly important.

Female genital system tuberculosis: a retrospective clinicopathological study of 1,548 cases in Turkish women

A case of squamous cell carcinoma of cervix co-existent with endometrial tuberculosis presenting as postmenopausal bleeding is being reported for its rarity. The atrophic postmenopausal endometrium is thought to be poorly supportive of tubercle bacilli. Following a radical Wertheim’s hysterectomy patient had a hectic postoperative period, which responded to antitubercular treatment. Diagnosis of tuberculosis in this case was made on histopathology postoperatively and confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on scrapes from the granulomas obtained by microdissection. Tuberculosis complicating malignant disease may occur in regions with a high prevalence of disease; with a resurgence of tuberculosis worldwide this association may not be uncommon. The diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis in a patient with cancer assumes importance as a high mortality has been seen in patients with co-existent disease.

Tuberculosis may coexist with malignancy. But coexistence of tuberculosis and cancer in cervix is extremely rare. We present a rare case of coexistent squamous cell carcinona and tuberculosis of uterine cervix in a 35 years old lady who presented with chief complaints of white discharge and bleeding per vagina since 1 year. Histopathological findings of carcinomatous nests along with epithelioid granuloma, langhans type of giant cells and positive acid fast bacilli in the tissue section give authenticity to our diagnosis. Tuberculosis complicating malignancy may occur in regions with high prevalence of this disease. Hence, proper diagnosis of tuberculosis in a patient with cancer assumes importance as it may add to the surveillance of the patient. Coexistent squamous cell carcinoma and tuberculosis in the cervix: a rare case report

Coexistence of tuberculosis and cancer in the uterine cervix is extremel- rare. Two of such cases are presented. In these cases, extension of tuberculous lesions is much wider than cancerous lesions. Pathological findings and positive acid-fast stained M-cobacterium tuberculosis in the tissue give authenticit- to the two cases. With regard to mutual influence between the two clinical entities nothing can be said on the basis of onl- two cases. However, it seems that at least tuberculosis did not aggravate the cancerous lesion.
