Stress analysis of interference fitted shaft–hub system under transient heat transfer conditions

This chapter primarily conducted the finite element analysis of the dynamic response of soil around the tunnel under dynamic load induced by the subway train; the main work and conclusions are summarized as below:

This chapter analyzed the mechanism of the generation of dynamic load induced by subway train and simulated it by programming in ANSYS.

According to the field investigation and data from the boreholes, we developed a 3D finite element numerical model by inputting the relevant data.

For obtaining accurate results without too large computational domain, artificial boundary was applied to simulate the soil body in the discretization of this model.

The dynamic response of the soil in the model was consistent to the data obtained from the field test. And the results were proved effective and reliable.

According to the calculation results, σ z ′ propagates further in vertical direction, while σ x ′ propagates further in the horizontal direction. Furthermore, the influence range of the dynamic load was determined by this model.

Residual thermal stress analysis in cylindrical steel bars using finite element method and artificial neural networks

This paper dwells on the nature of the highly non-linear interactions occurring during heat treatments with the aim of developing an improved understanding of the process and of the residual strains and stresses formed in heat-treated components during processing. As an example, two industrial quench processes are analysed. A general analytical strategy is presented to study not only these processes, but is formulated in such a way that it may also be extended to other thermomechanical processes. This strategy may therefore serve as a roadmap for industrial designers to analyse thermomechanical processes for optimization. Results in the broad framework of thermomechanical processing indicate that careful characterization and correct representation of the heat transfer conditions leads to significant improvements in accuracy over the current quench modelling techniques. Analysis of residual strain and stress states due to heat treatment and thermal processing

A finite-element method is used to analyse the transient–temperature and residual-stress fields in an axisymmetric metal specimen during quenching. In the calculation of transient-temperature fields it is assumed that an unsteady source of latent heat exists in the specimen when a phase transformation occurs. Factors such as the surface heat transfer coefficient, heat conductivity coefficient, linear expansion coefficient, density, specific heat capacity, latent heat, and so forth are all temperature dependent. The elastic-plastic properties of the specimen are modified according to temperature fields, which are determined; the influence of plastic deformation on the temperature fields is neglected. The agreement between the calculated results and the experimental data shows that the numerical analysis method is reliable. The method may also be applied to the analysis of specimens with other than axisymmetric shape.MST/15
