Water droplets on rugged hydrophobic surfaces typically exhibit one of the following two states: (i) the Wenzel state [Wenzel RN (1936) Ind Eng Chem 28:988–994] in which water droplets are in full contact with the rugged surface (referred as the wetted contact) or (ii) the Cassie state [Cassie, ABD, Baxter S (1944) Trans Faraday Soc 40:546–551] in which water droplets are in contact with peaks of the rugged surface as well as the “air pockets” trapped between surface grooves (the composite contact). Here, we show large-scale molecular dynamics simulation of transition between Wenzel state and Cassie state of water droplets on a periodic nanopillared hydrophobic surface. Physical conditions that can strongly affect the transition include the height of nanopillars, the spacing between pillars, the intrinsic contact angle, and the impinging velocity of water nanodroplet (“raining” simulation). There exists a critical pillar height beyond which water droplets on the pillared surface can be either in the Wenzel state or in the Cassie state, depending on their initial location. The free-energy barrier separating the Wenzel and Cassie state was computed on the basis of a statistical-mechanics method and kinetic raining simulation. The barrier ranges from a few tenths of kBT0 (where kB is the Boltzmann constant, and T0 is the ambient temperature) for a rugged surface at the critical pillar height to ≈8 kBT0 for the surface with pillar height greater than the length scale of water droplets. For a highly rugged surface, the barrier from the Wenzel-to-Cassie state is much higher than from Cassie-to-Wenzel state. Hence, once a droplet is trapped deeply inside the grooves, it would be much harder to relocate on top of high pillars.

Coexistence and transition between Cassie and Wenzel state on pillared hydrophobic surface

Superhydrophobicity is obtained on photolithographically structured silicon surfaces consisting of flat-top pillars after a perfluorosilanization treatment. Systematic static contact angle measurements were carried out on these surfaces as a function of pillar parameters that geometrically determine the surface roughness, including pillar height, diameter, top perimeter, overall filling factor, and disposition. In line with thermodynamics models, two regimes of static contact angles are observed varying each parameter independently: the "Cassie" regime, in which the water drop sits suspended on top of the pillars (referred to as composite), corresponding to experimental contact angles greater than 140-150 degrees, and the "Wenzel" regime, in which water completely wets the asperities (referred to as wetted), corresponding to lower experimental contact angles. A transition between the Cassie and Wenzel regimes corresponds to a set of well-defined parameters. By smoothly depositing water drops on the surfaces, this transition is observed for surface parameter values far from the calculated ones for the thermodynamic transition, therefore offering evidence for the existence of metastable composite states. For all studied parameters, the position of the experimental transition correlates well with a rough estimation of the energy barrier to be overcome from a composite metastable state in order to reach the thermodynamically favored Wenzel state. This energy barrier is estimated as the surface energy variation between the Cassie state and the hypothetical composite state with complete filling of the surface asperities by water, keeping the contact angle constant.

Water wetting transition parameters of perfluorinated substrates with periodically distributed flat-top microscale obstacles.

Contact angle hysteresis (CAH) is critical to superhydrophobicity of a surface. This study proposes a free energy thermodynamic analysis (of a 2-D model surface) that significantly simplifies calculations of free energy barrier associated with CAH phenomena. A microtextured surface with pillar structure, typical of one used in experimental studies, is used as an example. We demonstrate that the predicted CAH and equilibrium contact angles are consistent with experimental observations and predictions of Wenzel's and Cassie's equations, respectively. We also establish a criterion for transition between noncomposite and composite wetting states. The results and methodology presented can potentially be used for designing superhydrophobic surfaces.

A thermodynamic approach for determining the contact angle hysteresis for superhydrophobic surfaces.

Silicon nanostructures for bioapplications

A rapid, easy-to-implement, and potentially large-scale production method for fabricating high-aspect-ratio columnar-like nanostructures on poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) is demonstrated. Plasma treatment of PDMS under appropriate conditions in SF6 gas, followed by plasma-induced fluorocarbon film deposition, results in PDMS surfaces of fully controlled wetting properties, geometrical characteristics leading to robust superhydrophobic surfaces, and transparency. Potential applications to microfluidic devices are outlined.

Nanotexturing of poly(dimethylsiloxane) in plasmas for creating robust super-hydrophobic surfaces

The equilibrium water contact angles of vertically aligned nanorod Si films were measured by the sessile drop method. For as-deposited hydrophilic films, there was a contact angle transition from a rough surface to a 'hemi-wicking' porous surface at normal film thickness d = 500 nm; while for the HF treated hydrophobic films, a transition from a partially composite to a composite surface was observed at the same film thickness. The observed results can be reasonably interpreted within the framework of the classical Young theory.
