XENONnT is a dark matter direct detection experiment, utilizing 5.9 t of instrumented liquid xenon, located at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. In this work, we predict the experimental background and project the sensitivity of XENONnT to the detection of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). The expected average differential background rate in the energy region of interest, corresponding to (1, 13) keV and (4, 50) keV for electronic and nuclear recoils, amounts to 12.3 ± 0.6 (keV t y)-1 and (2.2± 0.5)× 10−3 (keV t y)-1, respectively, in a 4 t fiducial mass. We compute unified confidence intervals using the profile construction method, in order to ensure proper coverage. With the exposure goal of 20 t y, the expected sensitivity to spin-independent WIMP-nucleon interactions reaches a cross-section of 1.4×10−48 cm2 for a 50 GeV/c2 mass WIMP at 90% confidence level, more than one order of magnitude beyond the current best limit, set by XENON1T . In addition, we show that for a 50 GeV/c2 WIMP with cross-sections above 2.6×10−48 cm2 (5.0×10−48 cm2) the median XENONnT discovery significance exceeds 3σ (5σ). The expected sensitivity to the spin-dependent WIMP coupling to neutrons (protons) reaches 2.2×10−43 cm2 (6.0×10−42 cm2).

Projected WIMP sensitivity of the XENONnT dark matter experiment

The status of tests of the standard electroweak model and of searches for new physics in allowed nuclear $\beta$ decay and neutron decay is reviewed including both theoretical and experimental developments. The sensitivity and complementarity of recent and ongoing experiments are discussed with emphasis on their potential to look for new physics. Measurements are interpreted using a model-independent effective field theory approach enabling to recast the outcome of the analysis in many specific new physics models. Special attention is given to the connection that this approach establishes with high-energy physics. A new global fit of available $\beta$-decay data is performed incorporating, for the first time in a consistent way, superallowed $0^+\to 0^+$ transitions, neutron decay and nuclear decays. The constraints on exotic scalar and tensor couplings involving left- or right-handed neutrinos are determined while a constraint on the pseudoscalar coupling from neutron decay data is obtained for the first time as well. The values of the vector and axial-vector couplings, which are associated within the standard model to $V_{ud}$ and $g_A$ respectively, are also updated. The ratio between the axial and vector couplings obtained from the fit under standard model assumptions is $C_A/C_V = -1.27510(66)$. The relevance of the various experimental inputs and error sources is critically discussed and the impact of ongoing measurements is studied. The complementarity of the obtained bounds with other low- and high-energy probes is presented including ongoing searches at the Large Hadron Collider.

New physics searches in nuclear and neutron $\beta$ decay : arXiv

In this review the quenching of the weak axial-vector coupling constant, $g_{\rm A}$, is discussed in nuclear $\beta$ and double-$\beta$ decays. On one hand, the nuclear-medium and nuclear many-body effects are separated, and on the other hand the quenching is discussed from the points of view of different many-body methods and different $\beta$-decay and double-$\beta$-decay processes. Both the historical background and the present status are reviewed and contrasted against each other. The theoretical considerations are tied to performed and planned measurements, and possible new measurements are urged, whenever relevant and doable. Relation of the quenching problem to the measurements of charge-exchange reactions and muon-capture rates is pointed out.

Value of the Axial-Vector Coupling Strength in β and ββ Decays: A Review

To test the relevance of the most common assumptions in the calculation of beta $(\ensuremath{\beta})$ and neutrino $(\ensuremath{\nu})$ spectra, a database of measured shape factors was created, containing 130 distinct transitions. Some analysis parameters were defined to characterize the quality of the calculated spectra. Results from this systematic comparison between theory and experiment are presented in detail. The ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{k}=1$ approximation for forbidden unique transitions is shown to be systematically worse than the correct calculation of the theoretical shape factors, where the energy dependence of the ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{k}$ parameters is included. Regarding forbidden nonunique transitions, the $\ensuremath{\xi}$ approximation is found to be valid for only about half of the first forbidden nonunique transitions and incorrect in all other cases. The criterion $2\ensuremath{\xi}/{E}_{0}\ensuremath{\gg}1$ is proved to be insufficient in itself if $2\ensuremath{\xi}/{E}_{0}l100$.
