An analytical approach for the management of regenerative energies in multiaxis servo-motor-drives, which can operate in parallel packaging/assembly/manufacturing lines, is presented in this paper. This energy management is achieved through a proper time-coordination between the speed commands of multiaxis drives. Moreover, the proposed approach significantly limits the peak value of the ac input current in these systems. It is mathematically proved that a time-delay can significantly increase the amount of utilized regenerative energy, and consequently decreases the amount of dissipated energy. In this paper, a set of closed-form formulas is developed for different acceleration-deceleration time ratios, where motor losses are neglected. The findings of this investigation were experimentally verified using a two-axis permanent-magnet motor-drive system, and the results are presented in this paper. The experimental results are in remarkable agreement with the developed closed-form formulas.

A Time-Coordination Approach for Regenerative Energy Saving in Multiaxis Motor-Drive Systems

This paper explores concepts for advanced series hybrid vehicle propulsion systems. These concepts are variations on the variable voltage variable frequency (VVVF) concept, where the electrical bus frequency and voltage vary proportionally with the system operating point. The concepts involve doubly fed machines. Each of these concepts has the potential to provide a full series hybrid drive with substantially reduced needs for electronic power conversion. The paper discusses the basic structures and performance of these machines, and provides a tabulation of the machine and power converter requirements over a typical operating range. Finally, conclusions are offered regarding the relative merits of these schemes.

Variable voltage variable frequency options for series hybrid vehicles

Two problems related with hybrid electric vehicles have been analyzed in this dissertation.
The first one consists in proposing a propulsion system scheme for the vehicle and the
second one consist in modeling it.
In order to set a propulsion system scheme, the standard configurations for the hybrid
electric vehicles are presented as well as some variations of the series topologies. Then,
a novel configuration which is composed by a synchronous machine and an induction
machine is also presented.
As said before, the second problem consist in modeling this novel configuration.
The reduced model of each machine of the dynamical model is described using the dqtransformation.
Bond Graph and Port-Controlled Hamiltonian approaches are also used
to describe the WRSM, the DFIM and the whole system models.
Finally, the analysis of the power flowing through the system and the regenerative
braking possibilities are done.

Regenerative energy saving in multi-axis servo-motor-drives

This paper describes the measurements and simulations of harmonics from six pulse adjustable speed drives in Pulp and paper Industry. Harmonic analysis of the distribution system is essential to study the behavior of equipments connected in the non-sinusoidal system environment for designing and optimal location of filters. The simulations are done in Mat lab by sim-link circuit simulator. Validation of the load models is done by performing case study for an Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd (TNPL) supply system and comparing the THDs obtained from simulation using MATLAB package with the THD values obtained by measurement. Due to a very close match, the simulators are used further to analyze different harmonic mitigation solutions. The best solution found by simulations, for the given plant, is an advanced harmonic filter dedicated for adjustable Speed Drives.

Modeling and simulation of 6-pulse rectifier drives with impacts to input current harmonics

This paper provides a detailed modeling of the variable voltage variable frequency drive system (VVVF) proposed by previous research. The AC/DC converter performance at low speed is tested and propulsion drive startup has been evaluated. The ability of the drive to provide power regeneration has been investigated, and the simulations suggest that the VVVF drive would have the ability to support substantial levels of pulse loads.
