The antinociceptive effect of some Egyptian medicinal plant extracts

A methanolic extract of Rhizophora apiculata was evaluated for its anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor activity against B16F10 melanoma cells in BALB/c mice. The administration of R. apiculata extract was shown to inhibit the solid tumor development in mice. R. apiculata treatment significantly reduced tumor cell glutathione (GSH) levels as well as serum γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) and nitric oxide (NO) levels in the tumor-bearing animals. The total white blood cell count and hemoglobin levels were also significantly increased in extract-treated hosts. The use of R. apiculata substantially reduced the acute inflammation (assessed as paw edema) induced by carrageenan and also reduced inflammation edema induced by formalin. Analysis of this methanolic extract revealed a high content of 4-pyrrolidinyl, pyrazole, and ketone derivatives. These studies suggest that R. apiculata extract could be used as a (natural) anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor agent.

Integrative oncology in the Middle East: from traditional herbal knowledge to contemporary cancer care

It has been reported that several members of Convolvulaceae family such as Convolvulus arvensis possess cytotoxic activity on some tumor cell lines. Proteoglycan mixture, the water extract of C. arvensis with high molecular weight, has potent anti-angiogenesis and stimulating effects. In this study, arial parts of C. arvensis were collected and identified, and the cytotoxic effects of chloroform, ethylacetate and hydroalcoholic extracts on human tumor cell line (Hela) were determined. Different concentrations of the extracts were added to the cultured cells and incubated for 72 h. Cell survival was evaluated using MTT assay. The chloroform extract of C. arvensis at tested concentrations showed a comparable cytotoxic effect to taxol against Hela cell (15 vs. 12 µg/ml). In conclusion, the higher cytotoxic activity seen with chloroform extract may be related to the presence of lipophilic glycosides as non-polar compounds extracted by chloroform.

Cytotoxic effect of convolvulus arvensis extracts on human cancerous cell line

Background Plant materials represent promising sources of anti-cancer agents. We developed and tested a novel extract from the ubiquitous plant Convolvulus arvensis. Materials and methods Convolvulus arvensis components were extracted in boiling water, and small molecules were removed by high-pressure filtration. The extract's biological activity was assessed by measuring its effects on S-180 fibrosarcoma growth in Kun Ming mice and on heparin-induced angiogenesis in chick embryos. We also examined the extract's effects on lymphocytes ex vivo and tumor cell growth in vitro. Results The extract (primarily proteins and polysaccharides) inhibited tumor growth in a dose-dependent fashion when administered orally. At the highest dose tested, 200 mg/kg/day, tumor growth was inhibited by roughly seventy percent. Subcutaneous or intraperitoneal administration at 50 mg/kg/day also inhibited tumor growth by over seventy percent. The extract's acute LD50 in Kun Ming mice was 500 mg/kg/day when injected, indicating that tumor growth inhibition occurred at non-toxic doses. It inhibited angiogenesis in chick embryos, improved lymphocyte survival ex vivo, and enhanced yeast phagocytosis, but did not kill tumor cells in culture. Conclusion High molecular mass extract deserves further study as an anti-cancer agent.

Effects of a high molecular mass Convolvulus arvensis extract on tumor growth and angiogenesis.

A bindweed and buckwheat extract is used to inhibit the growth of tumor cells, inhibit the growth of blood vessels, and enhance immune function. The bindweed and buckwheat extract requires minimal purification and produces a low toxicity anti-tumor and immuno-stimulating extract.
