Investigation on microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys with various Zn/Mg ratios

Combining transmission electron microscopes and density functional theory calculations, we report the nucleation and growth mechanisms of room temperature rolling induced face-centered cubic titanium (fcc-Ti) in polycrystalline hexagonal close packed titanium (hcp-Ti). Fcc-Ti and hcp-Ti take the orientation relation: 〈0001〉hcp||〈001〉fcc and , different from the conventional one. The nucleation of fcc-Ti is accomplished via pure-shuffle mechanism with a minimum stable thickness of three atomic layers, and the growth via shear-shuffle mechanisms through gliding two-layer disconnections or pure-shuffle mechanisms through gliding four-layer disconnections. Such phase transformation offers an additional plastic deformation mode comparable to twinning.

7XXX series aluminum alloys (Al 7XXX alloys) are widely used in bearing components, such as aircraft frame, spars and stringers, for their high specific strength, high specific stiffness, high toughness, excellent processing, and welding performance. Therefore, Al 7XXX alloys are the most important structural materials in aviation. In this present review, the development tendency and the main applications of Al 7XXX alloys for aircraft structures are introduced, and the existing problems are simply discussed. Also, the heat treatment processes for improving the properties are compared and analyzed. It is the most important measures that optimizing alloy composition and improving heat treatment process are to enhance the comprehensive properties of Al 7XXX alloys. Among the method, solid solution, quenching, and aging of Al 7XXX alloys are the most significant. We introduce the effects of the three methods on the properties, and forecast the development direction of the properties, compositions, and heat treatments and the solution to the corrosion prediction problem for the next generation of Al 7XXX alloys for aircraft structures. The next generation of Al 7XXX alloys should be higher strength, higher toughness, higher damage tolerance, higher hardenability, and better corrosion resistance. It is urgent requirements to develop or invent new heat treatment regime. We should construct a novel corrosion prediction model for Al 7XXX alloys via confirming the surface corrosion environments and selecting the accurate and reliable electrochemical measurements.

The effects of trace Er on the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of newly designed Al–Zn–Mg–Cu–Zr alloys for drilling pipes were investigated After homogenization, most of the eutectics dissolved into the matrix and some primary phases remained, including Al8Cu4Er, Al12(Mn,Cr), and Al3Ti Dispersed nano-sized Al3(Er,Zr) precipitates were formed in the Er-containing alloys after homogenization Following extrusion, solution and retrogression re-aging (RRA) treatment, the hardness and yield strength of the 010 wt% Er-containing alloy are increased by 14% (254 HV) and 127% (70 MPa) compared to the alloy without Er This improvement could be ascribed to the precipitation strengthening of fine Al3(Er,Zr) particles, which complemented the conventional η' phase precipitation strengthening The intergranular corrosion resistance of the RRA-treated alloy with the addition of 010 wt% Er was improved by 65% due to a lower amount of high angle grain boundaries The fracture and intergranular corrosion mechanisms in alloys with and without Er addition were linked to the respective grain structures
