Rotating machinery intelligent diagnosis based on deep learning (DL) has gone through tremendous progress, which can help reduce costly breakdowns. However, different datasets and hyper-parameters are recommended to be used, and few open source codes are publicly available, resulting in unfair comparisons and ineffective improvement. To address these issues, we perform a comprehensive evaluation of four models, including multi-layer perception (MLP), auto-encoder (AE), convolutional neural network (CNN), and recurrent neural network (RNN), with seven datasets to provide a benchmark study. We first gather nine publicly available datasets and give a comprehensive benchmark study of DL-based models with two data split strategies, five input formats, three normalization methods, and four augmentation methods. Second, we integrate the whole evaluation codes into a code library and release it to the public for better comparisons. Third, we use specific-designed cases to point out the existing issues, including class imbalance, generalization ability, interpretability, few-shot learning, and model selection. Finally, we release a unified code framework for comparing and testing models fairly and quickly, emphasize the importance of open source codes, provide the baseline accuracy (a lower bound), and discuss existing issues in this field. Convolutional neural network based bearing fault diagnosis of rotating machine using thermal images

In recent years, autoencoder has been widely used for the fault diagnosis of mechanical equipment because of its excellent performance in feature extraction and dimension reduction; however, the original autoencoder only has limited feature extraction ability due to the lack of label information. To solve this issue, this study proposes a feature distance stack autoencoder (FD-SAE) for rolling bearing fault diagnosis. Compared with the existing methods, FD-SAE has stronger feature extraction ability and faster network convergence speed. By analyzing the characteristics of original rolling bearing data, it is found that there are evident differences between normal data and faulty data. Therefore, a simple linear support vector machine (SVM) is used to classify normal data and faulty data, and then the proposed FD-SAE is used for fault classification. The novel combination of SVM and FD-SAE has simple structure and little computational complexity. Finally, the proposed method is verified on the rolling bearing data set of Case Western Reserve University (CWRU).

Infrared machine vision and infrared thermography with deep learning: A review

Artificial intelligence (AI)-based rotor fault diagnosis (RFD) poses a variety of challenges to the prognostics and health management (PHM) of the Industry 4.0 revolution. Rotor faults have drawn more attention from the AI research community in terms of utilizing fault-specific characteristics in its feature engineering, compared to any other rotating machinery faults. While the rotor faults, specifically structural rotor faults (SRF), have proven to be the root cause of most of the rotating machinery issues, the research in this field largely revolves around bearing and gear faults. Within this scenario, this paper is the first of its kind to attempt to review and define the role of AI in RFD and provides an all-encompassing review of rotor faults for the researchers and academics. In addition, this study is unique in three ways: (i) it emphasizes the use of fault-specific characteristic features with AI, (ii) it is grounded in fault-wise analysis rather than component-wise analysis with appropriate fault categorization, and (iii) it portrays the current research and analysis in accordance with different phases of an AI-based RFD framework. Finally, the section on future research directions is aimed at bridging the gap between a laboratory-based solution and a real-world industrial solution for RFD.
