In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning have been transforming the landscape of scientific research. Out of which, the chatbot technology has experienced tremendous advancements in recent years, especially with ChatGPT emerging as a notable AI language model. This comprehensive review delves into the background, applications, key challenges, and future directions of ChatGPT. We begin by exploring its origins, development, and underlying technology, before examining its wide-ranging applications across industries such as customer service, healthcare, and education. We also highlight the critical challenges that ChatGPT faces, including ethical concerns, data biases, and safety issues, while discussing potential mitigation strategies. Finally, we envision the future of ChatGPT by exploring areas of further research and development, focusing on its integration with other technologies, improved human-AI interaction, and addressing the digital divide. This review offers valuable insights for researchers, developers, and stakeholders interested in the ever-evolving landscape of AI-driven conversational agents. This study explores the various ways ChatGPT has been revolutionizing scientific research, spanning from data processing and hypothesis generation to collaboration and public outreach. Furthermore, the paper examines the potential challenges and ethical concerns surrounding the use of ChatGPT in research, while highlighting the importance of striking a balance between AI-assisted innovation and human expertise. The paper presents several ethical issues in existing computing domain and how ChatGPT can invoke challenges to such notion. This work also includes some biases and limitations of ChatGPT. It is worth to note that despite of several controversies and ethical concerns, ChatGPT has attracted remarkable attentions from academia, research, and industries in a very short span of time. 

ChatGPT: A comprehensive review on background, applications, key challenges, bias, ethics, limitations and future scope

Abstract Natural hazard named entity recognition is a technique used to recognize natural hazard entities from a large number of texts. The method of natural hazard named entity recognition can facilitate acquisition of natural hazards information and provide reference for natural hazard mitigation. The method of named entity recognition has many challenges, such as fast change, multiple types and various forms of named entities. This can introduce difficulties in research of natural hazard named entity recognition. To address the above problem, this paper constructed a natural disaster annotated corpus for training and evaluation model, and selected and compared several deep learning methods based on word vector features. A deep learning method for natural hazard named entity recognition can automatically mine text features and reduce the dependence on manual rules. This paper compares and analyzes the deep learning models from three aspects: pretraining, feature extraction and decoding. A natural hazard named entity recognition method based on deep learning is proposed, namely XLNet-BiLSTM-CRF model. Finally, the research hotspots of natural hazards papers in the past 10 years were obtained through this model. After training, the precision of the XLNet-BilSTM-CRF model is 92.80%, the recall rate is 91.74%, and the F1-score is 92.27%. The results show that this method, which is superior to other methods, can effectively recognize natural hazard named entities.

Deep learning-based methods for natural hazard named entity recognition

In this work, we present the ChemNLP library that can be used for 1) curating open access datasets for materials and chemistry literature, developing and comparing traditional machine learning, transformers and graph neural network models for 2) classifying and clustering texts, 3) named entity recognition for large-scale text-mining, 4) abstractive summarization for generating titles of articles from abstracts, 5) text generation for suggesting abstracts from titles, 6) integration with density functional theory dataset for identifying potential candidate materials such as superconductors, and 7) web-interface development for text and reference query. We primarily use the publicly available arXiv and Pubchem datasets but the tools can be used for other datasets as well. Moreover, as new models are developed, they can be easily integrated in the library. TFM: A Triple Fusion Module for Integrating Lexicon Information in Chinese Named Entity Recognition

Named Entity Recognition (NER) involves the identification and classification of named entities in unstructured text into predefined classes. NER in languages with limited resources, like French, is still an open problem due to the lack of large, robust, labelled datasets. In this paper, we propose a transformer-based NER approach for French using adversarial adaptation to similar domain or general corpora for improved feature extraction and better generalization. We evaluate our approach on three labelled datasets and show that our adaptation framework outperforms the corresponding non-adaptive models for various combinations of transformer models, source datasets and target corpora.

Transformer-Based Named Entity Recognition for French Using Adversarial Adaptation to Similar Domain Corpora

Named entity recognition (NER) is the basis for many natural language processing (NLP) tasks such as information extraction and question answering. The accuracy of the NER directly affects the results of downstream tasks. Most of the relevant methods are implemented using neural networks, however, the word vectors obtained from a small data set cannot describe unusual, previously-unseen entities accurately and the results are not sufficiently accurate. Recently, the use of XLNet as a new pre-trained model has yielded satisfactory results in many NLP tasks, integration of XLNet embeddings in existent NLP tasks is not straightforward. In this paper, a new neural network model is proposed to improve the effectiveness of the NER by using a pre-trained XLNet, bi-directional long-short term memory (Bi-LSTM) and conditional random field (CRF). Pre-trained XLNet model is used to extract sentence features, then the classic NER neural network model is combined with the obtained features. In addition, the superiority of XLNet in NER tasks is demonstrated. We evaluate our model on the CoNLL-2003 English dataset and WNUT-2017 and show that the XLNet-BiLSTM-CRF obtains state-of-the-art results.
