New insights into the mechanism of cooling rate on the impact toughness of coarse grained heat affected zone from the aspect of variant selection

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors tried to establish a direct correlation between crystallographic variants and impact toughness, and provided some novel insights into the mechanism of cooling rate on the impact toughness of coarse grained heat affected zone (CGHAZ) of offshore engineering steel by means of electron back-scattering diffraction (EBSD) analysis.
Journal ArticleDOI

Characterization of the multi-pass weld metal and the impact of retained austenite obtained through intercritical heat treatment on low temperature toughness

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explored the relationship between the microstructure and low temperature toughness of weld metal obtained from a real multi-pass weld joint (up to 55mm) by submerged arc welding, which was developed for high strength (yield strength over 550 MPa) and heavy wall pipe fitting applications with composition of 0.1% C, 2.0% Mn and other micro-alloys.
Journal ArticleDOI

Analysis of impact toughness scatter in simulated coarse-grained HAZ of E550 grade offshore engineering steel from the aspect of crystallographic structure

TL;DR: In this paper, the impact toughness scatter from the aspect of crystallographic structure was analyzed in an offshore engineering steel sample at different cooling rates, and it was shown that the largest scatter in impact toughness occurred in the sample with medium cooling rate (15°C/s), which was attributed to the heterogeneity in crystallographic structures.
Journal ArticleDOI

New insights from crystallography into the effect of refining prior austenite grain size on transformation phenomenon and consequent mechanical properties of ultra-high strength low alloy steel

TL;DR: In this paper, the relationship between prior austenite grain size and mechanical properties and enhance the understanding of Hall-Petch relationship was established based on new insights from crystallography.
Journal ArticleDOI

Influence of welding pass on microstructure and toughness in the reheated zone of multi-pass weld metal of 550 MPa offshore engineering steel

TL;DR: In this paper, a Gleeble-3500 simulator was applied to simulate microstructural evolution in sub-regions of the reheated zone and its effect on the properties.
