Heterojunction photocatalysts for the removal of nitrophenol: A systematic review.

Considering the water shortage, one of the reliable sources of water available is wastewater. Traditional methods of pollutants from wastewater treatment do not always meet the goals of resource sustainability. Using microalgae to treat pollutants from different wastewater is feasible, and microalgae biofilm technology is expected to alleviate the above shortcomings. This review mainly focuses on the algal biofilm structure and discusses the effects of light, substrate, temperature, and other possible factors on biofilms formation. Biomass dispersed in liquid media can be easily harvested by scraping microalgal biofilm systems that recover microalgae. Algae-bacteria biofilms can actually provide self-sustaining oxygen supply while removing organic matter, heavy metals, and antibiotics, thereby greatly reducing the cost of microalgae cultivation. The symbiosis of microalgae and bacteria is conducive to the formation of algal biofilms, which has greater environmental and economic benefits than monocultures. Therefore, microalgae biofilm can offer a significant theoretical reference for resource utilization from wastewater biofilm treatment. 

The intrinsic characteristics of microalgae biofilm and their potential applications in pollutants removal — A review

Water pollution has become a critical issue because of the Industrial Revolution, growing populations, extended droughts, and climate change. Therefore, advanced technologies for wastewater remediation are urgently needed. Water contaminants are generally classified as microorganisms and inorganic/organic pollutants. Inorganic pollutants are toxic and some of them are carcinogenic materials, such as cadmium, arsenic, chromium, cadmium, lead, and mercury. Organic pollutants are contained in various materials, including organic dyes, pesticides, personal care products, detergents, and industrial organic wastes. Nanostructured materials could be potential candidates for photocatalytic reduction and for photodegradation of organic pollutants in wastewater since they have unique physical, chemical, and optical properties. Enhanced photocatalytic performance of nanostructured semiconductors can be achieved using numerous techniques; nanostructured semiconductors can be doped with different species, transition metals, noble metals or nonmetals, or a luminescence agent. Furthermore, another technique to enhance the photocatalytic performance of nanostructured semiconductors is doping with materials that have a narrow band gap. Nanostructure modification, surface engineering, and heterojunction/homojunction production all take significant time and effort. In this review, I report on the synthesis and characterization of nanostructured materials, and we discuss the photocatalytic performance of these nanostructured materials in reducing environmental pollutants.

Bioremediation of phenolic pollutants by algae - current status and challenges.

Linkages between Soil Erosion and Long-Term Changes of Landscape Pattern in a Small Watershed on the Chinese Loess Plateau

Assessing regional sediment yield variation and their responses to the potential controlling factors are critical to develop specific strategies of soil conservation measures to adapt to future climate change. This study attempted to investigate the spatial–temporal variation of sediment load in the Wei River basin in the midstream of the Yellow River during 1961–2015 at 15 hydrological stations. The results indicated that annual sediment load in the past six decades decreased significantly (P < 0.01) with the changing trends of −6.43 × 104, −3.86 × 104, −4.6 × 104 t/a at Xianyang, Zhangjiashan, and Zhuangtou stations, respectively. Annual sediment load exhibited abrupt changes in the mid-1990s, which were largely attributed to the strong effects of soil conservation measures in the study area. The spatial pattern of soil erosion were characterized by high sediment yield in the north with sparse vegetation cover and well-developed gullies, and low sediment yield in the south with flat plain and good vegetation cover in the Wei River basin. The results of the partial least squares-structural equation model (PLS-SEM) showed that vegetation changes and rainfall variability explained 62.3%, 47.3%, and 40.1% of the variation in runoff at Xianyang, Zhuangtou, and Zhangjiashan stations, respectively, whereas 59.4%, 17.6% and 48% of the variation in sediment load were explained by the combining effects of rainfall variability, changes of vegetation and runoff. This study provides a deep insight for understanding the effects of driving forces on sediment yield changes, and can be useful to regional soil conservation planning in the region.
