Every city contains interesting places and stories to be discovered. Mobile Augmented Reality provides the means to enrich tourists through precise and tailored information about the surroundings of the area they are visiting. MobiAR is an AR platform based on Android, which assists users who need tourist information about a city. When users observe reality through the MobiAR application via their mobile devices, they can experience events that took place at their location through multimedia content, and can access useful information to plan their routes in the city. This paper describes the MobiAR platform and presents the evaluation process that has been applied to the MobiAR application, in order to gather the opinion of real users.

Evaluation of Mobile Augmented Reality Applications for Tourism Destinations

Knowledge engineering techniques are becoming useful and popular components of hybrid integrated systems used to solve complicated practical problems in different disciplines. Knowledge engineering techniques offer features such as: learning from experience, handling noisy and incomplete data, helping with decision making, and predicting. This chapter presents the application of a knowledge structure to different fields of study by constructing Decisional DNA. Decisional DNA, as a knowledge representation structure, offers great possibilities on gathering explicit knowledge of formal decision events as well as a tool for decision making processes. Its versatility is shown in this chapter when applied to decisional domains in finances and energy. The main advantages of using the Decisional DNA rely on: (i) versatility and dynamicity of the knowledge structure, (ii) storage of day-to-day explicit experience in a single structure, (iii) transportability and share ability of the knowledge, and (iv) predicting capabilities based on the collected experience. Thus, after showing the results, we conclude that the Decisional DNA, as a unique structure, can be applied to multi-domain systems while enhancing predicting capabilities and facilitating knowledge engineering processes inside decision making systems.

The implementation details and the definition of the implementation methodology are exposed in this article, along with the results of the evaluation. Some novel techniques that aim to optimize the performance of ROs are also presented with highlights of the test application introduced in our previous work.

Impact of reflexive ontologies in semantic clinical decision support systems

THE SCOPE OF THIS RESEARCH IS THE DEFNITION OF NEW METHODOLOGIES AND THE CREATION OF NEW TOOLS THAT ALLOW THE SEMANTIC ENHANCEMENT OF VIRTUAL ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS (VEA) THROUGH THE SEMANTIC ENHANCEMENT OF THEIR CONTAINED VIRTUAL ENGINEERING TOOLS (VET). THIS WORK COMBINES VIRTUAL ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS (E.G. COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN, STEEL DETAILING, ETC.), AND STATE OF THE ART TECHNOLOGIES (E.G. VIRTUAL REALITY, AUGMENTED REALITY, ETC) WITH SEMANTIC TECHNIQUES IN A PRODUCT LIFE CYCLE CONTEXT.

Semantic enhancement of virtual engineering applications

With an exponential growth in the amount of information available in diverse domains, the traditional Information retrieval (IR) approaches which based on keywords can not meet the semantic needs of users. Semantic query, as an application of Semantic Web, has shown significant potential in improving the performance of IR. However, many current semantic query engines focus only on the ontology query, while in real world lots of data is stored in heterogeneous relational databases, not ontologies. So how to use semantic query to search the real information in databases has become an issue. In this paper, we explore a novel semantic search approach based on ontology, which uses SPARQL to query the Global Ontology, and realizes the final search of information in the heterogeneous relational databases through a series of query rewrite. A prototype system named 'OSEQ' has been implemented in light of this approach. And it is illustrated by a case study in the E-commerce domain.

An Ontology-Based System for Semantic Query over Heterogeneous Databases

How to best perform a search over a dataset is a common field of research in the scientific community. Query engines are used when the information is handled by an ontology in order to obtain structured information semantically. A common issue that arises is when the same query is performed several times, as the query engine must check the domain every time in order to retrieve the information. In this paper, we propose an architecture that takes advantage of the concept of Reflexive Ontologies (RO) in order to achieve timely semantic retrieval. The proposed architecture is illustrated by a case study in the Film Heritage domain, showing a performance improvement and providing ground for further research and discussion.
