The nature of manufacturing systems faces ever more complex, dynamic and at times even chaotic behaviors. In order to being able to satisfy the demand for high-quality products in an efficient manner, it is essential to utilize all means available. One area, which saw fast pace developments in terms of not only promising results but also usability, is machine learning. Promising an answer to many of the old and new challenges of manufacturing, machine learning is widely discussed by researchers and practitioners alike. However, the field is very broad and even confusing which presents a challenge and a barrier hindering wide application. Here, this paper contributes in presenting an overview of available machine learning techniques and structuring this rather complicated area. A special focus is laid on the potential benefit, and examples of successful applications in a manufacturing environment.

Machine learning in manufacturing: advantages, challenges, and applications

In general image recognition problems, discriminative information often lies in local image patches. For example, most human identity information exists in the image patches containing human faces. The same situation stays in medical images as well. “Bodypart identity” of a transversal slice—which bodypart the slice comes from—is often indicated by local image information, e.g., a cardiac slice and an aorta arch slice are only differentiated by the mediastinum region. In this work, we design a multi-stage deep learning framework for image classification and apply it on bodypart recognition. Specifically, the proposed framework aims at: 1) discover the local regions that are discriminative and non-informative to the image classification problem, and 2) learn a image-level classifier based on these local regions. We achieve these two tasks by the two stages of learning scheme, respectively. In the pre-train stage, a convolutional neural network (CNN) is learned in a multi-instance learning fashion to extract the most discriminative and and non-informative local patches from the training slices. In the boosting stage, the pre-learned CNN is further boosted by these local patches for image classification. The CNN learned by exploiting the discriminative local appearances becomes more accurate than those learned from global image context. The key hallmark of our method is that it automatically discovers the discriminative and non-informative local patches through multi-instance deep learning. Thus, no manual annotation is required. Our method is validated on a synthetic dataset and a large scale CT dataset. It achieves better performances than state-of-the-art approaches, including the standard deep CNN.

Multi-Instance Deep Learning: Discover Discriminative Local Anatomies for Bodypart Recognition

Cancer diagnosis is one of the most studied problems in the medical domain. Several researchers have focused in order to improve performance and achieve to obtain satisfactory results. Breast cancer is one of cancer killer in the world. The diagnosis of this cancer is a big problem in cancer diagnosis researches. In artificial intelligent, machine learning is a discipline which allows to the machine to evolve through a process. Machine learning is widely used in bio informatics and particularly in breast cancer diagnosis. One of the most popular methods is K-nearest neighbors (K-NN) which is a supervised learning method. Using the K-NN in medical diagnosis is very interesting. The quality of the results depends largely on the distance and the value of the parameter “k” which represent the number of the nearest neighbors. In this paper, we study and evaluate the performance of different distances that can be used in the K-NN algorithm. Also, we analyze this distance by using different values of the parameter “k” and by using several rules of classification (the rule used to decide how to classify a sample). Our work will be performed on the WBCD database (Wisconsin Breast Cancer Database) obtained by the university of Wisconsin Hospital.

Breast Cancer Diagnosis by using k-Nearest Neighbor with Different Distances and Classification Rules

In this paper, a survey has been made on the applications of intelligent computing techniques for diagnostic sciences in biomedical image classification. Several state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques for automation of biomedical image classification are investigated. This study gathers representative works that exhibit how AI is applied to the solution of very different problems related to different diagnostic science analysis. It also detects the methods of artificial intelligence that are used frequently together to solve the special problems of medicine. SVM neural network is used in almost all imaging modalities of medical image classification. Similarly fuzzy C means and improvements to it are important tool in segmentation of brain images. Various diagnostic studies like mammogram analysis, MRI brain analysis, bone and retinal analysis etc., using neural network approach result in use of back propagation network, probabilistic neural network, and extreme learning machine recurrently. Hybrid approach of GA and PSO are also commonly used for feature extraction and feature selection.

A Survey on Artificial Intelligence Approaches for Medical Image Classification

This work is directed toward the development of a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system to detect abnormalities or suspicious areas in digital mammograms and classify them as malignant or nonmalignant. Original mammogram is preprocessed to separate the breast region from its background. To work on the suspicious area of the breast, region of interest (ROI) patches of a fixed size of 128×128 are extracted from the original large-sized digital mammograms. For training, patches are extracted manually from a preprocessed mammogram. For testing, patches are extracted from a highly dense area identified by clustering technique. For all extracted patches corresponding to a mammogram, Zernike moments of different orders are computed and stored as a feature vector. A support vector machine (SVM) is used to classify extracted ROI patches. The experimental study shows that the use of Zernike moments with order 20 and SVM classifier gives better results among other studies. The proposed system is tested on Image Retrieval In Medical Application (IRMA) reference dataset and Digital Database for Screening Mammography (DDSM) mammogram database. On IRMA reference dataset, it attains 99 % sensitivity and 99 % specificity, and on DDSM mammogram database, it obtained 97 % sensitivity and 96 % specificity. To verify the applicability of Zernike moments as a fitting texture descriptor, the performance of the proposed CAD system is compared with the other well-known texture descriptors namely gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and discrete cosine transform (DCT).

Computer-Aided Diagnosis of Malignant Mammograms using Zernike Moments and SVM

This paper presents a tumor detection algorithm from mammogram. The proposed system focuses on the solution of two problems. One is how to detect tumors as suspicious regions with a very weak contrast to their background and another is how to extract features which categorize tumors. The tumor detection method follows the scheme of (a) mammogram enhancement. (b) The segmentation of the tumor area. (c) The extraction of features from the segmented tumor area. (d) The use of SVM classifier. The enhancement can be defined as conversion of the image quality to a better and more understandable level. The mammogram enhancement procedure includes filtering, top hat operation, DWT. Then the contrast stretching is used to increase the contrast of the image. The segmentation of mammogram images has been playing an important role to improve the detection and diagnosis of breast cancer. The most common segmentation method used is thresholding. The features are extracted from the segmented breast area. Next stage include, which classifies the regions using the SVM classifier. The method was tested on 75 mammographic images, from the mini-MIAS database. The methodology achieved a sensitivity of 88.75%.

Early Detection of Breast Cancer using SVM Classifier Technique

This paper presents an algorithm which aims to assist the radiologist in identifying breast cancer at its earlier stages. It combines several image processing techniques like image negative, thresholding and segmentation techniques for detection of tumor in mammograms. The algorithm is verified by using mammograms from Mammographic Image Analysis Society. The results obtained by applying these techniques are described.
