Fresnal Zones in Wireless Links, Zone Plate Lenses and Antennas

Satellite-based telecommunication systems operating in Ka-band require high gain ground terminal antennas. A promising architecture based on dual frequency printed Fresnel reflectors is presented in this paper. The complete development of this antenna including its design methodology, manufacturing, and testing is described. In order to scan its beam, the proposed antenna system can either be combined with electric motors or be transformed into a reconfigurable reflectarray system by replacing the passive reflecting cells by reconfigurable ones. A possible way of implementing such electronically reconfigurable reflecting cells is also presented.

A Dual Frequency Ka-Band Printed Fresnel Reflector for Ground Terminal Applications

In this paper, we numerically analyze the polarization-dependent focusing properties of a planar reflective lens formed by two parallel layers of nonuniform “gangbuster” surfaces (GSs) above a ground plane. Since these GSs consist of superdense arrays of thin finite-length parallel metallic wires, the desired phase patterns on such a lens surface are achieved by adjusting the lengths of these metallic wires for appropriate polarization components. In our analysis, we use the method of moments (MoM) and the transmission-lines analogy, along with the surface-equivalence theorem, to estimate the field intensity in the focal plane. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numerical Study of Polarization-Dependent Focusing for a Bilayer Planar FSS Reflective Lens at Millimeter Wavelengths

Conventional dielectric lenses rely on the accumulation of phase delay during wave propagation to produce a desired wavefront. By considering the required phase delay at each lens position, an ‘equivalent’ transmitarray antenna can be obtained. Despite a lack of curvature as in conventional lenses, the phase delay in the transmitarray antenna is achieved via a periodic arrangement of unit cell elements to bend the incident waves in the desired directions. This paper presents the design and characterization of a 4-layer transmitarray antenna consisting of double square ring elements. The gap between the double square rings is varied as a fixed proportion of their dimensions, while keeping the widths constant. The transmitarray element can achieve a transmission phase range of 235◦ with a loss of less than 3 dB. The performance of the transmitarray antenna is explicitly compared to that of a convex dielectric lens, both of which are operating at 8 GHz.

Design of a Transmitarray Antenna Using 4 Layers of Double Square Ring Elements

The performance of the printed single and double layer phase correcting arrays is theoretically analysed. Then, the latest development of the single printed reflector is reported. The successful design of a practical size single printed reflector for the reception of direct broadcasting by satellite (DBS) is described. The reflector covers three full Fresnel zones and a quarter wave zone, and has a 59.4 cm diameter and 0.8 focal length to diameter ratio. A 43% maximum antenna efficiency and a bandwidth of greater than 10% were measured. The close-in sidelobes of the antenna are about -22 dB and the far-out sidelobes are below -30 dB. >
