An alignment technique for fiber bundles using a multiple square orifice which involves threading plastic or glass fibers from multiple spools through a convergent multiple orifice made of converging glass tubes or a metal grid perforated with square or rectangular holes. The aligned bundle is then passed through a sizing aperture and either binder is applied or the fibers are fused together at predetermined intervals therealong. The aligned bundles may then be cut to the desired length.

Alignment techniques for fiber bundles

A filament winding reel in a method and apparatus for producing optical fiber bundles, includes an end disc and circumferentially spaced freely rotatable longitudinally projecting rollers. A pair of outwardly open peripherally spaced filament guides having aligned guide channels are mounted on the border of the disc and have widths substantially equal to, or slightly greater than the optical fiber thickness. The fibers are tensioned by a tensioning roller carried by a disc mounted lever disposed approximately opposite the guides and outwardly spring biased, and longitudinal pressure is applied to the fibers proximate the guides to uniformly align the fibers in the guide channels by tensioning bars bearing on the sides of the fibers proximate the guides.

Apparatus for manufacturing optical fiber bundle

A process for manufacturing a fiber optic display screen is disclosed where a fiber is guided onto a revolving drum and disposed into input and output clamps located on the surface of the drum. The fiber guiding device allows the fiber to be precisely located on the surface of the drum in a hexagonal offset pattern in corresponding locals in the input and output clamps. The strand is continuously guided over several layers of long thin rectangular slotted spacers until the desired height of the display is created. The fibers between the output spacers are then cut to form two or more rectangular or square shaped fiber optic display screen apparatus. Large display screens can be constructed by placing several sections of these display apparatus together.

Method of manufacturing an image magnification device

In one embodiment, a process for manufacturing an optical fiber coupler of the invention utilizes a rotating drum that has a sloted portion or stacking slot for receiving multiple lengths of fiber in a stack. A support for the input ends of the fibers is in the form of a block which is secured to the surface of the drum in spaced relation with the slot. The block has a plurality of shallow, parallel spaced apart grooves in parallel alignment with the stacking slot. An end of the fiber is initially threaded preferably into the stacking slot and then sequentially located alternately in vacant grooves in the support. As the drum is rotated, a positioner operates to move the fiber transversely in the direction parallel to the drum axis so as to align the fiber in each respective one of the grooves and the slot for each rotation of the drum. The process continues until all the grooves are all occupied and the stacking slot is filled with a corresponding number of fiber lengths. The stacked output ends of the fibers are secured together by an appropriate adhesive and the input ends of the fibers are likewise secured in the grooves of the block by an appropriate adhesive. The fibers are severed at the input and output ends to allow for removal of one or more devices from the drum. The invention also includes the apparatus for performing the process and the resulting optical fiber coupler.
