Chemical investigation of Croton pullei (Euphorbiaceae) collected in the Brazilian Amazon region was revisited. The chemical composition of the essential oils of leaves and stems was analyzed by GC/MS. It was found that both the oils comprise mainly terpenes, among which linalool was the major one (24.90 and 39.72%, respectively). Phytochemical investigation of the stem methanol extract led to the isolation of a new natural product from the glutarimide alkaloid group named N-[2,6-dioxo-1-(2-phenylethyl)-3-piperidinyl]-acetamide, confirming that C. pullei is a rich source of this class of alkaloids. The hexane and methanol extracts of the stems of C. pullei showed moderate antibacterial and antifungal activity and the highest inhibition was observed when the methanol extract was tested against Staphylococcus aureus CCMB 262 and CCMB 263.

Purpose: The focus of the present paper was a preliminary phytochemical and TLC analysis of the various extracts (root, stem and leaf) of the mangrove plant Excoecaria agallocha L. Methods: Phytochemical analysis was carried out using the standard phytochemical assays. TLC analysis of the petroleum ether and chloroform fraction of the leaves was carried out using the solvent system Toluene: Ethyl acetate (in 9:1 ratio) and Toluene: Ethyl acetate: Formic acid (in 5:5:0.2 ratio) for PE and chloroform fractions respectively. Result and conclusion: The results of the preliminary phytochemical screening revealed the presence of various chemical compounds like alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, carbohydrates, anthraquinone, tannins, phenols, terpenoids, fixed oil and fats. Organoleptic study revealed the specific nature of the plant parts used in the study. The behavior of the powdered plant parts in presence of various chemicals was studied. TLC analysis of the petroleum ether and chloroform fraction of the leaves of Excoecaria agallocha L. revealed bands indicating the presence of various compounds that could act as potential antimicrobial agents.

Preliminary phytochemical analysis and thin layer chromatography of the extracts of excoecaria agallocha l.

Objective: To identify the anti-cancer activity of Excoecaria agallocha (Euphorbiaceae) is a Mangrove Plant used in folklore medicine for the treatment of several diseases. The present study was aimed at using leaf crude extract as anti cancer agent. The methanol extract was treated with under various concentrations and similarly treated with chloroform extract. The results are clearly indicated the anti cancer cell line activity of E. agallocha. Method: To analyze the in vitro studies using the crude extract. The leaf extract of E. agallocha was used for this study. Result: The cell viability was maximum at the lower concentration (µg/ml) when compare to higher concentration. At 3.906 (µg/ml) concentrations, the cell viability of 85.32 and 81.96 were found to occur at 1:128 dilution of Methanol and Chloroform extracts respectively. At the same concentration of 31.25 and at the dilution of 1.16, cell viability was observed 65.55 in methanol and 45.55 in chloroform extracts. At the higher concentration the cell viability of 22.35 and 8.12 was recorded in the Methanol and Chloroform extracts.

Anticancer activity of excoecaria agallocha leaf extract in cell line model

The antibacterial activity of the root, stem and leaf extracts of Excoecaria agallocha L. was tested against the test organisms Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella spp., Shigella sonnei and Staphylococcus aureus. The activity was tested both by agar well diffusion and disc diffusion methods. It was found that the extracts were very effective in controlling the growth of all the organisms tested.

A study on the antibacterial effects of the various extracts of excoecaria agallocha l.

Excoecaria agallocha a milky mangrove, blind your eye mangrove, or a river poison tree is widely distributed in Indian coastal regions. The present study focuses on evaluation of phenolics and flavanoids present in Excoecaria agallocha. The FTIR analysis of various  mangrove extract  is also studied .The FTIR analysis showed the presence of flavones, alcohol,arenes,aliphatic functional group. Total phenolic content (TPC) expressed as gallic acid equivalents (GAE) ranged from 6.3±0.4 (whole plant petroleum ether extract) to 10.83±0.7 (stem methanol extract) mg GAE/g dry weight. Total flavonoid content expressed as quercetin equivalents (QE) ranged from 9.2±0.9 (whole plant ethyl acetate extract) to 33.8±0.9 ( leaf methanol extract) mg QE/g dry weight.
