Presents two methods developed to extract quantitative information from video recordings of neonatal seizures in the form of temporal motion strength and motor activity signals. Motion strength signals are extracted by measuring the area of the body parts that move during the seizure and the relative speed of motion using a combination of spatiotemporal subband decomposition of video, nonlinear filtering, and segmentation. Motor activity signals are extracted by tracking selected anatomical sites during the seizure using a modified version of a feature-tracking procedure developed for video, known as the Kanade-Lucas-Tomasi (KLT) algorithm. The experiments indicate that the temporal signals produced by the proposed methods provide the basis for differentiating myoclonic from focal clonic seizures and distinguishing these types of neonatal seizures from normal infant behaviors.

Extraction of motion strength and motor activity signals from video recordings of neonatal seizures

This paper presents some recent advances in videometry that resulted from the development of video processing and analysis procedures designed to facilitate the quantification of neonatal seizures. This paper presents two automated procedures developed to extract temporal information from video recordings of neonatal seizures in the form of temporal motion strength and motor activity signals. These signals constitute an effective representation of videotaped clinical events and can be used in the development of an intelligent system for seizure recognition and characterization.

Advancing videometry through applications: quantification of neonatal seizures from video recordings

The Internet community is very heterogeneous in terms of access bandwidth and terminal capabilities, hence, there is much interest for low-computation, software-only, scalable video coders that guarantee universal access to video communication. Scalability allows users to achieve a fair quality of service in relation to their resources. Low complexity, on the other hand, is necessary in order to ensure that also users with low computing power can be served.In this work, we propose a multiplication-free video codec, whose complexity is much reduced with respect to standard coders at the price of a limited increase in memory requirements. To this end we resort to very simple coding tools such as table lookup vector quantization (VQ) and conditional replenishment. We start from the simple coder proposed in [1], which already guarantees high scalability and limited computational burden, and improve upon it by further reducing complexity, as well as the encoding rate, with no effect on the encoding quality. The main innovation is the use of ordered VQ codebooks, which allows the encoder to generate correlated indexes, unlike in conventional VQ. Index correlation, in turn, allows us to carry out conditional replenishment (the most time-consuming operation in the original coder) by working on indexes rather than on block of pixels, and to reduce drastically its complexity. In addition, we also take advantage of the correlation among indexes to compress them by means of a predictive scheme, which leads to a 15-20% rate reduction in the base layer, without significant increase in complexity. Thanks to these and other minor optimizations we have obtained improved performance and, more important, a 60-70% reduction of the encoding time (on a general purpose machine) with respect to [1].

Low-Complexity Scalable Video Coding through Table Lookup VQ and Index Coding

We propose in this work to synthesize online the visual content of a complex video into multiple sprites, while detecting on-the-fly each sprite’s limits. For each received frame, physically meaningful camera rotation angles and focal lengths are firstly estimated from frame-to-sprite homography. These physical parameters are then used by a thresholding-based assignment stage to confirm whether the frame can be added without distortions on one of the sprites that have been built up to that instant. In this case, the selected sprite will be updated online accordingly by applying direct frame-to-sprite warping and advanced median blending of only the newly discovered background content. Else, a new sprite must be defined while selecting the current frame as a reference frame. Extensive experiments accomplished on challenging videos demonstrate that the proposed approach can process online a long video while preventing accumulation of alignment errors.

An online approach for multi-sprite generation based on camera parameters estimation

This paper presents a variable bit-rate encoding scheme developed for digital video compression based on spatiotemporal decomposition and vector quantization. This encoding scheme exploits the interframe redundancy present in image sequences by employing replenishment of code-vector labels. The experiments indicated that code-vector label replenishment results in a significant reduction of the number of bits required for encoding the frames of image sequences. The proposed video-compression system outperformed the H.261 video-compression standard at high compression ratios, and produced reconstructed video of comparable visual quality at medium and low compression ratios.
