The paper proposes a model of brushless DC motor considering behavior of the motor during commutation. The torque characteristic of BLDC motor presents a very important factor in design of the BLDC motor drive system, so it is necessary to predict the precise value of torque, which is determined by the waveforms of back-EMF. After development of simple mathematical model of the BLDC motor with sinusoidal and trapezoidal waveforms of back-EMF the motor is simulated in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. Based on analysis of the time responses a comparison study of results of both BLDC motor types is presented in Graphical User Interface of MATLAB environment.

Modeling and simulation of the BLDC motor in MATLAB GUI

This paper proposes the advanced model of brushless dc motor drives considered behaviour of commutation and waveform of for dynamic simulation of automotive application under Matlab/Simulink environment. We need a model of BLDC motor drives that control algorithm and BLDC motor drive system can be designed and simulated as a point of system level. The model has to consider commutation phenomenon. A waveform of back-EMF of BLDC motor can be modified to depend on BLDC motor type. To satisfy above factors need a co-simulation technique with other circuit level simulation tools. However, there are severe constraints, i.e. simulation speed and interface with tools. The advanced model proposed in this paper considers behaviour of commutation and waveform of back-EMF for comprehensive analysis and prediction of dynamic characteristics of BLDC motor drives. The commutation phenomenon is implemented by functional behaviour description and back-EMF is modelled by pattern of waveform. The developed model is split into few parts with object-oriented manner for reusability and scalability. It is easily integrated with other models of automotive application.

Dynamic Simulation of Brushless DC Motor Drives Considering Phase Commutation for Automotive Applications

Automotive Industry is targeting sustainable transportation in near future. Therefore hybrid and electric vehicles are going to be popular due to their sustainability, energy saving and zero emission. Electric motors play significant role in EV's. In-wheel motor technology is being used in modern electric vehicles to improve efficiency, safety and controllability of vehicle nowadays. BLDC motor have been demanding as in-wheel motor in electric vehicles because of high efficiency, desired torque versus speed characteristics, high power density and low maintenance cost. In this paper BLDC motor with ideal back-EMF is modeled and simulated in MATLAB / SIMULINK. Simulation model of the controller and BLDC drive are also presented. In order to validate the model various simulation models are studied. Simulations results depict from developed model are satisfactory and show correct performance of model.

Modeling of BLDC Motor with Ideal Back- EMF for Automotive Applications

In recent days, utilization of the renewable energy sources has been emphasized in high-rise buildings, where dc microgrid is established. It is known that the brushless direct current (BLDC) motors have smooth speed control, high-power density, and less complexities in power converter and controller when operated with dc supply as compared to other electrical motors. Hence, this paper enunciates the scope of using BLDC motors for elevator systems suitable for operating with a dc microgrid. For analyzing the proposed BLDC motor-based elevator system, a MATLAB mechatronic simulation model has been developed by inserting various electrical and mechanical components. Four quadrant operation of the proposed elevator system has also been indicated with the simulation results. To demonstrate the successful working of the proposal, a prototype elevator system has been designed and developed in the laboratory. The overall closed-loop controller has been implemented using a Xilinx Spartan-3E field programmable gate array (FPGA). Experiments have been conducted for the upward and downward movement of the elevator cabin with and without load and the findings are given in this paper. Regenerative braking is also possible for the proposed system by employing a suitable gear mechanism in place of worm gear.

Development of BLDC Motor-Based Elevator System Suitable for DC Microgrid

A BLDC motor with the characteristics of high speed and high power density has been more widely used in industrial areas. As for the design of the motor drive system, a simulation method has been used for the drive system, and the controller of the BLDC motor has become more complicated and precise. The torque characteristic of a BLDC motor is a very important factor in the design of the motor drive system, so it is necessary to predict the precise value of torque, which is determined by the back EMF waveform. The conventional simulation model of BLDC motor is obtained by approximation of real back EMF waveform to ideal trapezoidal waveform. But as the shapes of slot, skew and magnet of BLDC motor are various subject to design purposes, the real back EMF waveform is to some degree deviant from the ideal trapezoidal waveform. As a result, when using the ideal trapezoidal waveform, the error occurs. As a consequence, in order to lessen such an error, the model of the BLDC motor with a real back EMF waveform is needed instead of its approximation model. In this paper, for the reduction of error in simulation, a new simulation model of the BLDC motor with nearly real back EMF waveform is proposed and through the simulation, the validity of the proposed model is shown for a three-phase BLDC motor.
