Stress and stress coping in cultivated plants

TL;DR: The overall implications of biological stress, which reflects the combination of water and drought stress, and environmental pollution stress, are studied.
Journal ArticleDOI

Evidence for the function of the free radical gas — nitric oxide (NO•) — as an endogenous maturation and senescence regulating factor in higher plants

TL;DR: The hypothesis that endogenously-produced nitric oxide (NO • ) gas is a natural plant growth regulator was experimentally tested in this paper, where a wide spectrum of both climacteric and non-climacteric varieties of fruits, flowers, vegetables and legume sprout species were investigated.
Journal ArticleDOI

The Characterization and Contrasting Effects of the Nitric Oxide Free Radical in Vegetative Stress and Senescence of Pisum sativum Linn. Foliage

TL;DR: Emission of both NO and ethylene from pea foliage increases with duration of stress and/or senescence promoting conditions and, depending on concentration, NO appears to exert a stress-coping or, contrariwise, an inhibitory effect on leaf growth.
Journal ArticleDOI

Plant senescence processes and free radicals

TL;DR: An important factor in the above processes appears to be lipoxygenase activity producing polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) hydroperoxides and subsequently several free radical species and senescence-promoting compounds such as ethylene, malondialdehyde and jasmonic acid.
Journal ArticleDOI

Non‐invasive photoacoustic spectroscopic determination of relative endogenous nitric oxide and ethylene content stoichiometry during the ripening of strawberries Fragaria anannasa (Duch.) and avocados Persea americana (Mill.)

TL;DR: Employing non-invasive photoacoustic spectrometry, emissions of nitric oxide (NO) and ethylene in post-harvest strawberries and avocados were monitored and a clear-cut stoichiometric relationship was found between the two gases.
