Apparatus and method for implementing a local proactive hot plug request/acknowledge scheme is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, each hot pluggable device installable on a computer bus, such as a SCSI bus, is provided with a physical user interface comprising a mechanical request initiator, such as a button or two-position switch, for allowing a user to generate a hot swap request to a controller associated with the bus prior to actual installation of the device on, or removal of the device from, the bus. Upon receipt of the request, the controller determines whether the requested action may be performed, provides a visual indication of its determination to the user via an LED on the user interface and, if installation or removal is determined to be prudent, performs the hot installation/removal in an orderly manner so as not to adversely affect ongoing system operations.

Automatic computer card insertion and removal algorithm

Circuitry and logic are provided to a bus control module of a system bus of a computer system to inject the bus control module into, and win a system test master arbitration process initiated by a live inserted and successfully self tested CPU or I/O board. However, upon winning the system test master arbitration, the bus control module will inform the live inserted CPU or I/O board that it is not interested in having the CPU or I/O board in participating in system wide testing. In fact, the bus control module will not even initiate any system wide testing. As a result, CPU or I/O boards equipped with circuitry and logic to support certain required power on/reset testing protocol may be live inserted into the system without modifications, and without interruption to system operation.

Method and apparatus for managing live insertion of CPU and I/O boards into a computer system

A monitoring computer (115) monitors a communication resource within a wireless communication system for transmissions by a communication unit. Upon detecting the transmission, which contains a service request, the monitoring computer compares the service request with stored service access information for the communication unit. When the service request made by the communication unit does not substantially match the stored service access information, the monitoring computer reprograms at least a portion of the service access information of the communication unit. In this manner, discrepancies in communication unit programming may be corrected. In another embodiment, service access information is transmitted to the monitoring computer for comparison.

Method for reprogramming a communication unit's access to a wireless communication system

A computer system has a bus, a connector for a circuit card, and a clamp configured to selectively prevent removal of the circuit card from the connector when the clamp is engaged. The computer system has circuitry connected to monitor the engagement status of the clamp and to regulate delivery of power to the connector based on the engagement state of the clamp.

Expansion card insertion and removal

A circuit device (e.g. mounted on a printed circuit board) is connected to a data network, to which network are also connected a plurality of other circuit devices under power. On removal of such a circuit device, the output driver connecting the circuit components of the output device to the communications bus of the bus network is first disconnected from power, and only when its disconnection is stable is the device withdrawn. A control device of the circuit device is connected to the control bus of the data network, and before power is disconnected from the output driver, the control device signals to the network so as to prevent other circuit devices connected to the network from signalling on the network. Effectively, the circuit device to be removed "occupies" the bus. This occupation is maintained until the disconnection of the output driver is stable, and then the circuit device can be removed from the network. Similarly, on insertion, the network is first occupied before power is connected to the output driver. In this way, it becomes possible to prevent faults due to missignalling between the other circuit devices connected to the network when one circuit device is inserted or removed.

Insertion and removal of a circuit device into a bus network

PURPOSE:To eliminate a trouble accompanied with insertion and pulling-out of live wires by connecting the output driver of a circuit device in the non-feed state to a communication bus and generating a signal to prevent signal transmission to the communication bus from the circuit device and supplying power from a power source to the output driver to eliminate the signal. CONSTITUTION:When a certain circuit device 2 will be inserted, a signal to supply power to an output driver 21 of the circuit device 2 to be inserted is generated after the other circuit devices in the feed state are prevented from transmitting signals to the communication bus of a bus network. This generated signal is kept till stabilization of the output driver 21 and is eliminated thereafter. At the time of pulling-out of the circuit device, a prescribed signal is supplied to the bus network from the circuit device 2 to be pulled out to stop signal transmission of the other circuit devices. This signal is kept till stabilization of the output driver 21, and the circuit device 2 is eliminated thereafter. Thus, disturbance during insertion or pulling-out of the circuit device is prevented.

Circuit device, circuit network, and live wire inserting and pulling-out method for circuit device

PURPOSE: To perform the protection of a computer and the improvement of operability for turning on/off a power source including a peripheral device easily with an existent computer when it is possible for the computer to relax or get out of the conditions for continuing its operation. CONSTITUTION: A CPU 2 equipped with a means for inputting a power source ON/OFF command from an uninterruptible power supply(UPS) and a means for outputting the stop command signal of the UPS 60 at the time of completely turning off the power source of this CPU 2, a fan 4 for cooling, and a control circuit 10 for turning on/off the power source of the CPU 2 and a peripheral device 3 corresponding to the output of a stop sensor for the fan 4 and a command from the outside or an operator, is housed in a housing 1. When the fan 4 is stopped, the control circuit 10 shuts down the CPU 2 and when the CPU 2 is completely shut down, the power source of the peripheral device 3 is turned off.
