The state of isotope hydrology research in Canada (2007–2022)

Growing challenges of climate change require urgent shifts in scientific research to inform environmental decision-making. In the context of water management of the Colorado River Basin (CRB), the impacts of intensifying forest disturbances under climate change are not well understood but expected to have major consequences. To address this, we developed a web-based tool, CRB-Scenario-Explorer, that provides interactive visual assessments of modelled future CRB hydrology scenarios and detailed documentation of our approach to support mindful interpretations. Water manager feedback and user-experience principles were incorporated to achieve a user-centered design. Stakeholders confirmed the effectiveness of the web-based tool in assisting with the discovery that future CRB hydrology appears more sensitive to climate uncertainty than forest disturbances, which can be used to brief leaders and spark discourse around risk management. CRB-Scenario-Explorer thus exemplifies a novel and effective method to increase the accessibility, applicability, and transparency of environmental science research.

Hydroinformatic Tools and Spatial Analyses for Water Resources and Extreme Water Events

Abstract. In this paper, we introduce VizPlan, a new platform to support the assessment of multidimensional indicators over time. VizPlan includes a visualisation scheme based on a radial visual structure that allows the direct comparison of indicator values over time, a search tool to support the identification of entities whose indicators are similar to each other, and a clustering tool to group entities according to their indicator scores. VizPlan was designed and implemented to be flexible; it can be easily tailored to the visualization and analysis of any multidimensional temporal data. In this paper, the use of VizPlan is illustrated in the context of three case studies concerning the analysis of sustainability indicators to support urban planning: key performance indicators related to the sustainable development goals, walkability analysis, and bus service availability assessment. All case studies refer to real data related to Norwegian cities, especially Ålesund. VizPlan is available as an open source software at https://github.com/Rylern/VizPlan – As of May 2022.


Vizplan: a visual analytics platform for the assessment of multidimensional indicators over time

Recent advances in information, communication, and environmental monitoring technologies have increased the availability, spatiotemporal resolution, and quality of water-related data, thereby leading to the emergence of many innovative big data applications. Among these applications, visualization and visual analytics, also known as the visual computing techniques, empower the synergy of computational methods (e.g., machine learning and statistical models) with human reasoning to improve the understanding and solution toward complex science and engineering problems. These approaches are frequently integrated with geographic information systems and cyberinfrastructure to provide new opportunities and methods for enhancing water resources management. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of recent hydroinformatics applications that employ visual computing techniques to (1) support complex data-driven research problems, and (2) support the communication and decision-makings in the water resources management sector. Then, we conduct a technical review of the state-of-the-art web-based visualization technologies and libraries to share our experiences on developing shareable, adaptive, and interactive visualizations and visual interfaces for water resources management applications. We close with a vision that applies the emerging visual computing technologies and paradigms to develop the next generation of hydroinformatics applications.
