TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed how different institutional frameworks condition the influence of selected social traits: the social stigma to entrepreneurial failure and the presence of entrepreneurial role models, over entrepreneurial activity levels in a rural area with strong industrial and entrepreneurial history versus those that are not necessarily characterized by such a tradition.
Abstract: This paper analyses how different institutional frameworks condition the influence of selected social traits: the social stigma to entrepreneurial failure and the presence of entrepreneurial role models, over entrepreneurial activity levels in a rural area with strong industrial and entrepreneurial history versus those that are not necessarily characterized by such a tradition. To attain this objective we undertake a rare events logit model using a robust Spanish dataset from 2003. The main contribution of the study indicates that there is a significant difference between entrepreneurial activity levels in rural Catalonia as compared to rural areas in the rest of Spain. This difference is in large part explained by the distinct impact of the observed social traits, where the presence of entrepreneurial role models is a prominent explanatory factor favouring entrepreneurial activity in rural (Catalonia) areas with strong industrial tradition. The findings of the paper back the growing call for territorial ...

TL;DR: Lafuente et al. as discussed by the authors examined the impact of entrepreneurial role models on the entrepreneurial process in rural areas with a strong entrepreneurial history versus those not necessarily characterized by such a tradition.
Abstract: Lafuente E., Vaillant Y. and Rialp J. (2007) Regional differences in the influence of role models: comparing the entrepreneurial process of rural Catalonia, Regional Studies 41, 779–795. The paper examines the impact of entrepreneurial role models on the entrepreneurial process in rural areas with a strong entrepreneurial history versus those not necessarily characterized by such a tradition. To attain this objective, a socio-cultural institutional approach to entrepreneurship is adopted. A Rare Events logit model using a robust Spanish data set from 2003 is carried out. The main contribution of the study indicates that the difference between entrepreneurial activity levels in rural Spain is in large part explained by the presence of entrepreneurial role models favouring entrepreneurial activity in rural Catalonia, an area with a strong entrepreneurial tradition. TL;DR: In this article, a comparative study of apoyo a la creación of empresas in the ambito rural de Cataluna in comparación with those aplicadas in the territorios urbanos is presented.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyse the evolution, objectives, resources and activities of a specialised unit -Technological Trampoline (TT) - in charge of new venture creation at the University of Girona.
Abstract: Recent trends in technology transfer show an intensification of spin-off creation as a modality of university research commercialisation, complementary to the conventional ones, contract research and licensing. In this paper we analyse the evolution, objectives, resources and activities of a specialised unit -Technological Trampoline (TT) - in charge of new venture creation at the University of Girona. Based on two theoretical frameworks, Resource-based-view and Institutional Theory, we adopt a multi-dimensional approach to study the strategy of spinning-off new ventures at the University of Girona in terms of resources and activities, how this process is organised and if the outputs fit with this UdG's objectives and the local environment.

TL;DR: In this article, the formal institutional framework related to new enterprise systems in urban and rural areas of Catalonia is analyzed, focusing on the supply side (institutions and support programmes) and on the demand side (new entrepreneurs).
Abstract: This paper presents some of the results of an empirical research that analyses the formal institutional framework related to new enterprise systems in urban and rural areas of Catalonia. The research focuses on the supply side (institutions and support programmes) and on the demand side (new entrepreneurs). Institutional economic theory is adopted as the theoretical framework of this research. For the supply of support programmes, personal interviews were carried out with the officials responsible for business support institutions in the urban county of Valles Occidental and in the rural county of Garrotxa. For the demand side, 92 and 58 telephone interviews were conducted with new entrepreneurs from the previously mentioned counties.
