Machine Learning is the study of methods for programming computers to learn. Computers are applied to a wide range of tasks, and for most of these it is relatively easy for programmers to design and implement the necessary software. However, there are many tasks for which this is difficult or impossible. These can be divided into four general categories. First, there are problems for which there exist no human experts. For example, in modern automated manufacturing facilities, there is a need to predict machine failures before they occur by analyzing sensor readings. Because the machines are new, there are no human experts who can be interviewed by a programmer to provide the knowledge necessary to build a computer system. A machine learning system can study recorded data and subsequent machine failures and learn prediction rules. Second, there are problems where human experts exist, but where they are unable to explain their expertise. This is the case in many perceptual tasks, such as speech recognition, hand-writing recognition, and natural language understanding. Virtually all humans exhibit expert-level abilities on these tasks, but none of them can describe the detailed steps that they follow as they perform them. Fortunately, humans can provide machines with examples of the inputs and correct outputs for these tasks, so machine learning algorithms can learn to map the inputs to the outputs. Third, there are problems where phenomena are changing rapidly. In finance, for example, people would like to predict the future behavior of the stock market, of consumer purchases, or of exchange rates. These behaviors change frequently, so that even if a programmer could construct a good predictive computer program, it would need to be rewritten frequently. A learning program can relieve the programmer of this burden by constantly modifying and tuning a set of learned prediction rules. Fourth, there are applications that need to be customized for each computer user separately. Consider, for example, a program to filter unwanted electronic mail messages. Different users will need different filters. It is unreasonable to expect each user to program his or her own rules, and it is infeasible to provide every user with a software engineer to keep the rules up-to-date. A machine learning system can learn which mail messages the user rejects and maintain the filtering rules automatically. Machine learning addresses many of the same research questions as the fields of statistics, data mining, and psychology, but with differences of emphasis. Statistics focuses on understanding the phenomena that have generated the data, often with the goal of testing different hypotheses about those phenomena. Data mining seeks to find patterns in the data that are understandable by people. Psychological studies of human learning aspire to understand the mechanisms underlying the various learning behaviors exhibited by people (concept learning, skill acquisition, strategy change, etc.).

Data Mining: Concepts and Techniques (2nd edition)

In this paper, we review the background and state-of-the-art of big data. We first introduce the general background of big data and review related technologies, such as could computing, Internet of Things, data centers, and Hadoop. We then focus on the four phases of the value chain of big data, i.e., data generation, data acquisition, data storage, and data analysis. For each phase, we introduce the general background, discuss the technical challenges, and review the latest advances. We finally examine the several representative applications of big data, including enterprise management, Internet of Things, online social networks, medial applications, collective intelligence, and smart grid. These discussions aim to provide a comprehensive overview and big-picture to readers of this exciting area. This survey is concluded with a discussion of open problems and future directions.

Big Data: A Survey

The use of Spatial Access Methods (SAMs) in spatial database systems, such as Geographical Information Systems, is necessary to achieve efficient retrieval of data items according to their spatial properties. Existing SAMs organizing minimum bounding rectangle (MBR) approximations of spatial objects can be classified into four groups. Each group is characterized by the special technique adopted for managing MBRs: (a) Ordering, (b) Transformation, (c) Clipping, and (d) Overlapping. This paper introduces a new technique. The basic idea of this technique is to represent all spatial objects by their MBRs and further reduce them into points of the same dimensionality, so that any multidimensional Point Access Method (PAM) may be used to support access. Essential for the functionality of the new method is the query window extension. Bearing in mind the changeable and complicated needs of business environment, in this paper we examine the necessity of evolution in the traditional decision support techniques. Our aim is to intensify the need for integrated performance measurement and management, as a way to ameliorate the existing tools for decision making, which are currently based on historical data. Because of the nature of challenges and trends in the retail industry, it is considered to be an appropriate application scenario. In addition to that, a framework is proposed and a case study is described as a proof of our claim.

Measuring Performance in the Retail Industry

In the current era of big spatial data, the vast amount of produced mobility data (by sensors, GPS-equipped devices, surveillance networks, radars, etc.) poses new challenges related to mobility analytics. A cornerstone facilitator for performing mobility analytics at scale is the availability of big data processing frameworks and techniques tailored for spatial and spatio-temporal data. Motivated by this pressing need, in this paper, we provide a survey of big data processing frameworks for mobility analytics. Particular focus is put on the underlying techniques; indexing, partitioning, query processing are essential for enabling efficient and scalable data management. In this way, this report serves as a useful guide of state-of-the-art methods and modern techniques for scalable mobility data management and analytics.

A Survey on Big Data Processing Frameworks for Mobility Analytics

Location-based social network users typically publish information about their location and activity (in the form of keywords) along time, thus providing the mobility data management research community with complex and voluminous data. In this work, we handle this kind of data as sequences in the Spatio-Temporal-Keyword (STK) domain. This modeling is coherent with the concept of semantic trajectories that has recently attracted the interest of this community. Our paper focuses on the efficient processing of pattern queries over the STK domain, hence called Spatio-Temporal-Keyword Pattern (STKP) queries. Our approach is based on efficient index structures that take into account the triple nature of these patterns and is developed in a NoSQL graph database. Through an extensive experimental study over real-life datasets, we demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposal.
