Metasurfaces are ultrathin metamaterials consisting of planar electromagnetic (EM) microstructures (e.g., meta-atoms) with pre-determined EM responses arranged in specific sequences. Based on careful structural designs on both meta-atoms and global sequences, one can realize homogenous and inhomogeneous metasurfaces that can possess exceptional capabilities to manipulate EM waves, serving as ideal candidates to realize ultracompact and highly efficient EM devices for next-generation integration-optics applications. In this paper, we present an overview on the development of metasurfaces, including both homogeneous and inhomogeneous ones, focusing particularly on their working principles, the fascinating wave-manipulation effects achieved both statically and dynamically, and the representative applications so far realized. Finally, we also present our own perspectives on possible future directions of this fast-developing research field in the conclusion.

Electromagnetic metasurfaces: physics and applications

Based on transformation optics, we introduce another set of generalized laws of reflection and refraction (differs from that of [Science 334, 333 (2011)]), through which a transformation media slab is derived as a meta-surface, producing anomalous reflection and refraction for all polarizations of incident light.

Generalized laws of reflection and refraction from transformation optics

Geometric metasurfaces primarily follow the physical mechanism of Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phases, empowering wavefront control of cross-polarized reflective/transmissive light components. However, inherently accompanying the cross-polarized components, the copolarized output components have not been attempted in parallel in existing works. Here, a general method is proposed to construct phase-modulated metasurfaces for implementing functionalities separately in co- and cross-polarized output fields under circularly polarized (CP) incidence, which is impossible to achieve with solely a geometric phase. By introducing a propagation phase as an additional degree of freedom, the electromagnetic (EM) energy carried by co- and cross-polarized transmitted fields can be fully phase-modulated with independent wavefronts. Under one CP incidence, a metasurface for separate functionalities with controllable energy repartition is verified by simulations and proof-of-principle microwave experiments. A variety of applications can be readily expected in spin-selective optics, spin-Hall metasurfaces, and multitasked metasurfaces operating in both reflective and transmissive modes.

A Fully Phase-Modulated Metasurface as An Energy-Controllable Circular Polarization Router.

Nanostructured metasurfaces demonstrate extraordinary capabilities to control light at the subwavelength scale, emerging as key optical components to physical realization of multitasked devices. Progress in multitasked metasurfaces has been witnessed in making a single metasurface multitasked by mainly resorting to extra spatial freedom, for example, interleaved subarrays, different angles. However, it imposes a challenge of suppressing the cross-talk among multiwavelength without the help of extra spatial freedom. Here, we introduce an entirely novel strategy of multitasked metasurfaces with noninterleaved single-size Si nanobrick arrays and minimalist spatial freedom demonstrating massive information on 6-bit encoded color holograms. Noninterleaved Metasurface for (26-1) Spin- and Wavelength-Encoded Holograms.

Phase, polarization, amplitude and frequency represent the basic dimensions of light, playing crucial roles for both fundamental light-mater interactions and all major optical applications. Metasurface emerges as a compact platform to manipulate these knobs, but previous metasurfaces have limited flexibility to simultaneous control them. Here, we introduce a multi-freedom metasurface that can simultaneously and independently modulate phase, polarization and amplitude in an analytical form, and further realize frequency multiplexing by a k-space engineering technique. The multi-freedom metasurface seamlessly combine geometric Pancharatnam-Berry phase and detour phase, both of which are frequency-independent. As a result, it allows complex-amplitude vectorial hologram at various frequencies based on the same design strategy, without sophisticated nanostructure searching of massive size parameters. Based on this principle, we experimentally demonstrate full-color complex-amplitude vectorial meta-holograms in the visible with a metal-insulator metal architecture, unlocking the long-sought full potential of advanced light field manipulation through ultrathin metasurfaces.

Full-Color Complex-Amplitude Vectorial Holograms Based on Multi-Freedom Metasurfaces

The emerging metasurfaces with the exceptional capability of manipulating an arbitrary wavefront have revived the holography with unprecedented prospects. However, most of the reported metaholograms suffer from limited polarization controls for a restrained bandwidth in addition to their complicated meta-atom designs with spatially variant dimensions. Here, we demonstrate a new concept of vectorial holography based on diatomic metasurfaces consisting of metamolecules formed by two orthogonal meta-atoms. On the basis of a simply linear relationship between phase and polarization modulations with displacements and orientations of identical meta-atoms, active diffraction of multiple polarization states and reconstruction of holographic images are simultaneously achieved, which is robust against both incident angles and wavelengths. Diatomic Metasurface for Vectorial Holography.

The emerging meta-holograms rely on arrays of intractable meta-atoms with various geometries and sizes for customized phase profiles that can precisely modulate the phase of a wavefront at an optimal incident angle for given wavelengths. The stringent and band-limited angle tolerance remains a fundamental obstacle for their practical application, in addition to high fabrication precision demands. Utilizing a different design principle, we determined that facile metagrating holograms based on extraordinary optical diffraction can allow the molding of arbitrary wavefronts with extreme angle tolerances (near-grazing incidence) in the visible-near-infrared regime. By modulating the displacements between uniformly sized meta-atoms rather than the geometrical parameters, the metagratings produce a robust detour phase profile that is irrespective of the wavelength or incident angle. The demonstration of high-fidelity meta-holograms and in-site polarization multiplexing significantly simplifies the metasurface design and lowers the fabrication demand, thereby opening new routes for flat optics with high performances and improved practicality.

Facile metagrating holograms with broadband and extreme angle tolerance

Nonlinear plasmonic metasurfaces are compatible with complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology and highly promising for on-chip optical switching and modulations and nanoscale frequency conversions. However, the low nonlinear-optical response of metasurface devices limits their practical applications. To circumvent this constraint, we propose the design of a nanocavity plasmonic metasurface, in which the strong light localization in the nanocavity can be used to boost the efficiency of second-harmonic generation. Compared with the single-layer counterpart, experimental results show that the intensity of the second-harmonic waves in the nanocavity metasurface is enhanced by ~790 times. The proposed nanocavity plasmonic metasurfaces in this work may open new routes for developing highly efficient nonlinear metacrystals for on-chip nonlinear sources, nonlinear image encryption, information processing, and so on.
