A magnetic disk device includes a rigid magnetic disk having a magnetic recording surface, a slider located on one side of the magnetic recording surface of the magnetic disk and adapted to be radially movable on the magnetic disk, and a magnetic head. A hard disk drive utilizing a combination of thin film recording heads and media allows high density recording through virtual contact recording, while still providing excellent contact start stop performance and low stiction. The air bearing surface of the head has a microscopically fine texture which provides reliable mechanical performance with a constant and very low flying height. A skew insensitive constant flying height over the disk surface can be provided with the use of transverse pressure contour or cross-cut slider designs. The slider air bearing surface is textured by selective mechanical removal of subsurface damaged regions left behind during the diamond lapping of the slider air bearing surface, thereby leaving the slider less abrasive to the disk. A slider with this fine texture on the air bearing surface permits the use of a much smoother texture and thinner overcoat on the disk than currently possible using conventional sliders. This combination of slider and the disk allows the head to fly very close to the magnetic layer of the media without suffering from head crash or high stiction. This combination offers a low cost and simplified method of achieving a high recording density.

A slider of a magnetic disk device has a main body and a protecting layer coated on the main body. The protecting layer has first flat surface which faces the magnetic recording surface of the rotatable disk and which extends in a tangential direction of the disk when the slider is located adjacent to the magnetic recording surface of the disk. The contact region of the first surface is in contact with the magnetic recording surface of the rotatable disk. Thus, a frictional force produced between the magnetic recording surface and the first flat surface is reduced, and the damage to the magnetic recording surface can be prevented. According to the present invention, the damage to the magnetic recording surface of the disk can be prevented, and the variation in distance between the magnetic recording surface and the magnetic head can be remarkably reduced. As a result, the recording density of data recorded on the magnetic disk can be increased.

A magnetic head which can fly over a surface of a magnetic recording medium comprises a main body fitted into a supporting arm, rail surfaces formed in the main body to serve pneumatic bearings, and projections formed on the rail surfaces and having surfaces opposing a magnetic recording medium. The projections have larger surface roughness than that of the magnetic recording medium, whereby wear-out rate of the projections provided on the magnetic head can be reduced and also the projections can be firmly brought into contact with the surface of the magnetic recording medium.

PURPOSE:To improve recording and reproduction and to increase the density of the recording and reproduction by forming a magnetic gap which has specific narrow width and magnetic gap length by using a thin film or thin belt of a ferromagnetic metallic material with large saturated magnetic flux density or a thin film or thin belt of a ferromagnetic material alloy material. CONSTITUTION:A member 18 made of a nonmagnetic material with wear resistance is arranged in contact at the periphery of the thin film or thin belt of the ferromagnetic metallic material exposed in the surface of a magnetic gap part or its periphery or the thin film or thin belt 17 of the ferromagnetic alloy material. Further, the thin film or thin belt 17 contacts widely the main body part of a magnetic core made of the same magnetic ferrite material as the magnetic ferrite material which constitutes a slide part at the prolongation part of the central rail 12 of the slider part 10. This floating type magnetic head, therefore, has its magnetic gap (g) with specific narrow width and magnetic gap length constituted by the part of the thin film or thin belt 17 having large saturated magnetic flux density. Consequently, there is no fringe and no dummy gap is formed, so high-density recording and reproduction are realized.
