Ultrafast lasers play an increasingly important role in many applications. Nanotubes and graphene have emerged as promising novel saturable absorbers for passive mode-locking. Here, we review recent progress on the exploitation of these two carbon nanomaterials in ultrafast photonics.

Ultrafast lasers mode-locked by nanotubes and graphene

In this paper, tin disulfide (SnS2), a two-dimensional (2D) n-type direct bandgap layered metal dichalcogenide with a gap value of 2.24 eV, was employed as a saturable absorber. Its appearance and nonlinear saturable absorption characteristics were also investigated experimentally. SnS2-PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) film was successfully prepared and employed as a mode-locker for achieving a mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser with a pulse width of 623 fs at a pulse repetition rate of 29.33 MHz. The results prove that SnS2 nanosheets will have wide potential ultrafast photonic applications due to their suitable bandgap value and excellent nonlinear saturable absorption characteristics.

Passively mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser based on SnS 2 nanosheets as a saturable absorber

Dual-comb spectroscopy holds the promise as real-time, high-resolution spectroscopy tools. However, in its conventional schemes, the stringent requirement on the coherence between two lasers requires sophisticated control systems. By replacing control electronics with an all-optical dual-comb lasing scheme, a simplified dual-comb spectroscopy scheme is demonstrated using one dual-wavelength, passively mode-locked fiber laser. Pulses with a intracavity-dispersion-determined repetition-frequency difference are shown to have good mutual coherence and stability. Capability to resolve the comb teeth and a picometer-wide optical spectral resolution are demonstrated using a simple data acquisition system. Energy-efficient, free-running fiber lasers with a small comb-tooth-spacing could enable low-cost dual-comb systems.

Picometer-resolution dual-comb spectroscopy with a free-running fiber laser

We report the generation of tunable single-, switchable and tunable dual-, and stable triple-wavelength dissipative solitons (DSs) in an all-normal-dispersion mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser based on a graphene-oxide saturable absorber (GOSA) without additional components (such as optical filter, or fiber grating). The tunable single-wavelength DS have a wide wavelength-tunable range of 16.4 nm. The dual-wavelength DSs not only have a wavelength-tunable range (about 10 nm) but also have variable wavelength spacing (3.8-13.8 nm). The formation dynamics of the triple-wavelength DSs was also investigated experimentally. The different operations of tunable single-, switchable and tunable dual-, and stable triple-wavelength DSs depend on the strength of the cavity birefringence. The simple, compact all-fiber DS laser with lasing wavelength tunability and flexibility can meet great potential for applications.

Tunable and switchable multi-wavelength dissipative soliton generation in a graphene oxide mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser

We propose and demonstrate a tunable and switchable dual-wavelength ultra-fast Tm-doped fiber laser. The tunability is based on nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) technique in a passively mode-locked laser cavity. The NPE effect induces wavelength-dependent loss in the cavity to effectively alleviate mode competition and enables the multiwavelength mode locking. The laser exhibits tunable dual-wavelength mode locking over a wide range from 1852 to 1886 nm. The system has compact structure and both the wavelength tuning and switching capabilities can be realized by controlling the polarization in the fiber ring cavity.

Tunable and switchable dual-wavelength Tm-doped mode-locked fiber laser by nonlinear polarization evolution.

We demonstrate a dual-wavelength passively mode-locked soliton fiber laser based on the single-wall carbon nanotube saturable absorber. By using a simple scheme of adjusting the intracavity loss, the gain profile of the erbium-doped fiber laser is effectively controlled. Besides operating at a single wavelength, the laser is able to simultaneously generate sub-picosecond pulses at both ~1532 and 1557 nm wavelength. The mode-locking wavelength can also be quickly switched from one wavelength to the other by changing the intracavity loss with a tunable attenuator.

Switchable, dual-wavelength passively mode-locked ultrafast fiber laser based on a single-wall carbon nanotube modelocker and intracavity loss tuning

A control driving system of a short pulse laser system of the invention relates to the laser driving field. The current driving control system can not perform feedback control to output light pulse so that a follow-up optical device can be easily damaged. The control driving system of the invention can solve the above problem. In the invention, a control driving module 9 uses a control module 4 and a driving circuit module 6 to provide current injection for a pumping source 1 and a pumping source 8. A temperature control module 7 provides a stable working temperature for the pumping source 1 and the pumping source 8. The control module 4 makes the pumping source 1 provide pumping light for a laser 2. A part of light output by the laser 2 is sent to a stable determination module 5 so as to be performed stable determination. A decision signal is sent to the control module 4. If the decision signal is stable, the control module 4 makes the pumping source 8 provide the pumping light for an amplifier 3. The amplifier 3 amplifies the light output by the laser 2. If the determination is unstable, the pumping light is stopped to be provided for the amplifier 3.

The inter-pulse interaction due to acoustic waves in a passively harmonic mode locked SWNT fiber laser that can operate at continuously tunable harmonic states is studied experimentally.
