The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) algorithm has attracted a great deal of interest among researches and practitioners in a wide variety of fields. The SOM has been analyzed extensively, a number of variants have been developed and, perhaps most notably, it has been applied extensively within fields ranging from engineering sciences to medicine, biology, and economics. We have collected a comprehensive list of 5384 scientific papers that use the algorithms, have benefited from them, or contain analyses of them. The list is intended to serve as a source for literature surveys. The present addendum contains 2092 new articles, mainly from the years 1998-2002. We have provided a keyword index to help finding articles of interest, and additionally a modern automatically constructed variant of a thematic index: a WEBSOM interface to the whole article collection of years 1981-2000. The weld deposition efficiency is an important economic factor like productivity and weld quality in gas metal arc welding (GMAW). There is a strong relationship between arc sound signals and arc stability (or deposition efficiency) in GMAW. In this work, the variation of weld deposition efficiency with various pulse parameters in pulsed metal inert gas welding was investigated. The arc sound signal along with current and voltage signals were acquired and analyzed in time domain as well as in frequency domain. The sound signal kurtosis and arc power were found to be highly correlated with welding process stability. The weld deposition efficiency was also related to weld surface peak temperature. Finally, an attempt was made to correlate the sound time domain as well as frequency domain features of sound signal with the deposition efficiency. The variation of pulse shape with the duty factor also influenced the deposition efficiency as evidenced by in fast Fourier transform analysis.

Prediction of metal deposition from arc sound and weld temperature signatures in pulsed MIG welding.

A method for automatic detection of weld defects of short-circuit gas metal arc welding is presented. It is based on the extraction of arc signal features as well as classification of the obtained features using self-organizing feature map (SOM) neural networks in order to get the weld quality information, for example, to determine if there is a defect in the product. This is important for the online monitoring of weld quality especially in robotic welding and lays the foundation for further real-time control of weld quality.
