Several state of the art papers and even books on brake vibration and/or noise have been presented in the literature. Many of them have analytically and sharply accounted for the impressive amount of research undertaken on this topic. This state of the art review focuses on the still-open questions that appear crucial from the perspective of a leading brake manufacturer. The paper deals with the phenomena of brake vibration and/or noise, the experimental and theoretical methods for studying such phenomena, and the actions that are identified to be necessary to definitely solve the addressed problem. Key topics are the modelling of friction, the modelling of the dynamics of the brake as a non-linear system subjected to deterministic or random (parametric) excitation, the proper modelling of the contact between the disc and the pad, and the experimental validation of the mathematical models.

* Corresponding authors) Abstract This paper proposes an approach to investigate the influencing factors of the brake pad on the disc brake squeal by integrating finite element simulations with statistical regression techniques. Complex eigenvalue analysis (CEA) has been widely used to predict unstable frequencies in brake systems models. The finite element model is correlated with experimental modal test. The 'input-output' relationship between the brake squeal and the brake pad geometry is constructed for possible prediction of the squeal using various geometrical configurations of the disc brake. Influences of the various factors namely; Young's modulus of back plate, back plate thickness, chamfer, distance between two slots, slot width and angle of slot are investigated using design of experiments (DOE) technique. A mathematical prediction model has been developed based on the most influencing factors and the validation simulation experiments proved its adequacy. The predicted results show that brake squeal propensity can be reduced by increasing Young's modulus of the back plate and modifying the shape of friction material by adding chamfer on both sides of friction material and by introducing slot configurations. The combined approach of modeling brake squeal using CEA and DOE is found to be statistically adequate through verification trials. This combined approach will be useful in the design stage of the disc brake.

A combined approach of complex eigenvalue analysis and design of experiments (DOE) to study disc brake squeal

This paper studies car disc brake squeal by transient analysis and details the first attempt to combine heat conduction analysis, contact analysis and transient analysis of disc brake squeal. The contact pressure at the disc/pads interface is first computed, and the information is used to define friction-induced heat flux. Its resultant heat conduction is then analysed. Finally, transient analysis is performed, considering the influence on squeal generation of contact pressure distribution affected by brake pad surface roughness and thermal deformation. A noticeable difference is found between the dynamic responses obtained with the thermal effect from those without the thermal effect.
