Full-duplex multimedia signal over single mode fiber using wavelength-division-multiplexing and Mach-Zehnder-Modulator is proposed and demonstrated. Our proposed scheme is suitable for 100 km SMF transmission with excellent BER and eye-opening.

A novel low-cost bidirectional multimedia data transmission using optical fiber in RoF system

Abstract A novel architecture of bidirectional gigabit signal transport system over long-haul single-mode fiber (SMF) using wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network technique is proposed and demonstrated. In order to offer multimedia services of high bandwidth, four signals of 5 Gbps data rates are externally modulated and transmitted through four channels over 100-km SMF in uplink and downlink. In our proposed scheme, an excellent bit error rate, good Q-factor and clear eye diagrams are observed for both 100-km uplink and downlink transmission. This architecture has potential to transmit 4×5 Gbps over long-haul fiber backbone and it will be useful in future broadband communications.

Advantages of the use of VCSEL over RSOA for uplink transmission on WDM-PON networks

Nowadays, the bandwidth demand of the telecommunication network is growing rapidly due to the increasing number of technology-intelligent users. Optical broadband access networks have emerged to address two issues: (1) channel capacity sharing fairly to the customers, and (2) adequate capacity assignment according to service requirements. The wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network (WDM PON) is a promising solution to provide high data rate, excellent scalability, good protocol transparency and easy upgradability. In this paper, a cost-effective bidirectional WDM PON is proposed to provide symmetrical 2.5 Gb/s by using just single optical laser diode (LD) at the central office (CO). The optical frequency upconversion (OFU) technique is used to implement the proposed network. At the optical network unit (ONU), the reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) reuses and amplifies the downlink wavelength to modulate the upstream data. The bit error rate (BER) performance and eye diagrams of the designed system are investigated.

We propose a new linearization scheme in optical external modulator employing high-pass filter characteristic of a gain saturated reflective semiconductor optical amplifier for an analog optical transmission system. The proposed scheme is based on power level relation between fundamental signal and IMD3 signal when a radio-frequency tone is modulated, using an optical modulator at linearity region of transfer curve. Based on the proposed idea, a linearized optical transmitter module is implemented and evaluated. The proposed scheme is demonstrated and verified using a small scale test-bed. Both carrier-to-interference ratio and spurious-free dynamic range are improved. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
