Journal ArticleDOI

Systematic significance of spore size in the Florideophyceae (Rhodophyta)

TL;DR: There is considerable variation in spore size in all populations of carpospores and tetraspores, and spores in advanced Florideophyceae form chiefly tetrahedral tetrasporangia with large spores; less advanced groups generally form cruciate or zonate tetraspora with smaller spores.
Journal ArticleDOI

Seasonal growth and reproduction of intertidal algae in the townsville region (Queensland, Australia)

TL;DR: The majority of the intertidal species, including most members of the Rhodophyta, express their full life history potential under the local environmental conditions, and there is a strong indication that for red algae the predominance of tetrasporophytes over gametophytes commonly reported by earlier workers may simply be a consequence of the sampling procedures used.
Journal ArticleDOI

Periodicity of spore discharge in tropical Florideophyceae (Rhodophyta)

TL;DR: Data on the periodicity of carpospore and tetraspore discharge in 48 tropical benthic algal taxa from 25 genera are given and the time of maximum spore output in the laboratory occurred when populations on the shore would be submerged in sea water.
